  1. More Patterns: Volcanoes and Earthquakes

  2. Before we start • You will need some partners to work with who are not at your table. • Take out a piece of binder paper. • Make a list of these planets: Mercury, Mars, Earth, Venus. • In a minute, you will look for a partner for each planet. When you find a partner, you write each other’s names next to that planet. • Keep going until you find a partner for each planet. • When you are done, sit down.

  3. Let’s think about volcanoes • Think about what you know about where volcanoes are located on the Earth. • We will use the Paired Verbal Fluency protocol to share your ideas. • In a minute you will go talk with your Mercury partner. First, let’s go over the instructions for PVF.

  4. What do you know about where volcanoes are located on Earth? • Decide who will be Person A and who will be Person B. • Person A talks for 30 seconds about the question while person B talks. Then pause for 15 seconds. • Person B talks for 30 seconds about the question while person A listens. Pause. • Person A talks for 30 seconds about what Person B said. Pause. • Person B talks for 30 seconds about what Person A said.

  5. Now let’s look at the maps • Find your maps of volcanoes on Earth and volcanoes on Mars (both have little red triangles). • Do you see any patterns (or a lack of pattern) in the location of volcanoes on each planet? Are they similar or different? • Talk with your partner, and record your thinking on the chart.

  6. Time to reflect • Pull out your journal • Make a little chart: I wonder… I used to think… Now I know…

  7. Now let’s think about earthquakes • Find your maps of earthquakes on the Earth and on the Moon • Do you see any patterns (or a lack of pattern) in the location of volcanoes on each planet? Are they similar or different? • Talk with your partner, and record your thinking on the chart.

  8. Another round of reflection • Add to your I used to think, Now I know, I wonder chart • Now let’s make a class share sheet of what we observed about volcanoes and earthquakes.
