  1. D.R. Ulrich Awards Dr. Ulrich pioneered the Air Force structural materials chemistry research program. He established and managed major national and international research programs in the chemical processing of ceramics, ceramic ultrastructure, sol-gel processing, nonlinear optical polymers, ordered polymers, molecular composites, polymer alloys, and multifunctional materials. He was awarded the 1988 Strategic Defense Award and Gold Medal by the American Defense Preparedness Association. He coedited 12 books, published 45 papers, and held five patents. Along with service on many other national committees on science and technology policy, he served as chairman on the subcommittee on monitoring of emerging technologies for the Secretary of Defense's Committee on National Security and Technology Transfer. The late Dr. Ulrich served as a program manager in AFOSR's Directorate of Chemical and Atmospheric Sciences from 1975 until 1990. 15th International Sol-Gel Conference - Porto de Galinhas (Brazil) - Aug.23-27, 2009
