Nauvoo, Illinois1839 to 1844 • More Wives than One? • According to Joseph, Emma was one and only wife. • According to William Law, Joseph secretly teaching polygamy. • According to William Marks, Joseph initially involved with practice but realized mistake and was trying to stop it at time of death.

  11. Nauvoo, Illinois1839 to 1844 • William Law and others printed Nauvoo Expositor to expose what they believed to be secret teachings in Nauvoo. • Nauvoo City Council, with Joseph as Mayor, ordered Expositor press shut down. • Building and Press were Destroyed.

  12. Nauvoo, Illinois1839 to 1844 • 27 June 1844-While in Carthage, Illinois to Answer Charges Related to Destruction of Press, Joseph and his Brother Hyrum were Killed by a Mob.
