  2. Statistics • More than 50 STD’s • 1 out of every 4 teens will get an STD at some point in their life • 4 STD’s can be fatal • 12 million new cases of STD’s reported each year • 2/3 of new cases in teens/young adults • Some will not be prevented by condoms

  3. Concerns • High rate of occurrence • Causes infertility • Causes cancer • Birth Defects/Newborn problems • No immunity – can be cured and then re-infected • If untreated – fatal • Costly – health care over a billion dollars

  4. Reached Epidemic Stage • Sexual intercourse at a young age • More sexual partners • Not taking precautions – teens invincible • Not seeking medical treatment – continue to infect others – sometimes no symptoms

  5. Ways to Avoid • Abstinence - Only sure way to protect oneself from acquiring an STD • Sexual Fidelity - Medical checkup - Monogamous relationship • Precautions - Latex condoms – physical barrier - Only takes one contact - Always a chance of failure – 15 – 30% fail • No Drug Use - Transferred by blood to blood - Contaminated needles - Lower Inhibitions
