  1. The Technology Connection to the Arkansas School Facilities Assessment Preamble “ - - - to ensure that adequate facilities and substantially equal facilities are, and will continue to be provided for Arkansas School children.” Act 1181 of 2003

Joint Committee on Educational FacilitiesResponsibilities Under Act 1181 of 2003 • Review and employ the opinion of the Supreme Court in the Lake View Case. • Recommend what constitutes an adequate school facility for: • Elementary Education • Middle School Education, and • High School Education

Joint Committee on Educational FacilitiesResponsibilities under Act 1181 of 2003 • Recommend a method of providing substantially equal facilities and equipment for all schools in Arkansas. • Establish a process to conduct a review and assessment of all public school facilities in the state. • Recommend policies and criteria to determine renovation, replacement, or discontinuation of inadequate buildings

Joint Committee on Educational FacilitiesResponsibilities under Act 1181 of 2003 • Recommend the cost of an adequate school facility in Arkansas. • Recommend a method of funding the cost of an adequate and substantially equal school facility. • Recommend a method to assess, evaluate, and monitor the school facilities across the state to ensure that adequate and substantially equal facilities are, and will continue to be provided for Arkansas’ school children.

  5. Facilities Assessment Goals • All buildings must be assessed • Assessment must be standardized • Assessment must be uniformly applied • Assessment must be objective • Consistently evaluated & reported

  6. Technology Support Committee • Determine support standards for supporting technical infrastructure. • Determine formulas and/or values for maintaining technology support adequacy on an annual basis.

Self-Assessment Survey an integral part of the total school facilities assessment. • The Arkansas Facilities Task Force Self-Assessment will help to accurately reflect the technology support needs of Arkansas schools and credit for what is already in place. • The due date is not until late summer as some school staff may not be available during the summer.

  19. Teachers are the key element in changing from the traditional classroom to a more technology-oriented classroom that is keeping up with the rapid advancements in our society.

  20. Teachers must be prepared, equipped, and supported in utilizing technology, for students and parents to benefit from the educational enhancements that technology has to offer.

Other Models To Consider • South Dakota’s Technology Teachers Learning Academy • The result of their Governor’s emphasis on teaching training for technology. • Training for a teacher to understand how technology can enhance instruction and learning. • A 20 day academy for teachers to receive training in both the use of technology and how that technology would be incorporated into the curriculum.
