  2. Managing Ahead Mintzberg (2009) points out in chapter one that management and leadership are intertwined and should not be treated as being different Although they should go hand-in-hand, too much focus is being placed on leadership while little emphasis has been placed on management To make more effective leaders, managers should be seen as leaders and leadership as management practiced well Effective management is a product of leaders’ personal experiences and is heavily reliant on the competencies of those they work with Each management situation is unique and should be handled according to the prevailing circumstances

  3. A Model For Managing In chapter three, Mintzberg discusses the managing model The prevailing thought is that all management theories are incorrect and also incorrect hence managers should utilize a combination of all of them The role of the manager is to make very good use of all the available resources, skills, abilities, and experiences The manager is at the center of the information pipeline where he/she processes and communicates information with others both internally and externally Managers should be focused in bringing out the best in people, facilitating effective teamwork, and enabling employees to develop professionally Management is a dynamic function that cannot be taught in the classroom but can only be learned through experiences over time

  4. The Inescapable Conundrums of Managing Managers are constantly faced with problems that need solutions, issues that should be reconciled, crises that are to be averted (Mitzberg, 2009) These situations that managers face at every twist and turn are what Mintzberg calls the conundrums of managing Within this book chapter, thirteen such conundrums of managing are identified and discussed The thirteen different managing conundrums are categorized under five general headings There are the ‘thinking conundrums’, ‘people conundrums’, ‘action conundrums’, ‘information conundrums’, and ‘overall conundrums’
