  1. DeQuervain’s Disease Tenosynovitis of the sheath or tunnel that surrounds the two tendons that control movement of the thumb. Briana Bain & Alex Byington

  2. Anatomy • Extensor pollicis brevis • Abductor pollicis longus

  3. Mechanism of Injury • The cause of DeQuervain’s disease remains idiopathic (arising spontaneously or from an obscure or unknown cause).

  4. Symptoms • Pain, tenderness, and swelling over thumb side of the wrist • Difficulty gripping • Finkelstien’s test

  5. Treatment • Surgery • Palliative treatments include a splint to immobilize wrist and thumb to the interphalangeal joint • Anti-inflammatory medication

  6. Recovery • Physical therapy focuses on lifting mechanics • Sometimes prescribes splint
