  11. Medium term objectives (6 - 10 y) (cont.) • Drawing up a strategy for disposal of spent fuel and other long-lived wastes. Issues to be addressed include: • Reference scenario to estimate costs (also required as input to fee calculation); • Determine R&D requirements; • Identify key steps in the process of developing a geological facility, with defined milestones; • Update the mid- and long-term plan periodically.

General presentation • Siting: Saligny site inside the exclusion zone of the NPP; • Land owners: Saligny Local Council (~70%) and private owners; • ANDRAD has legal permission from land owners for issuing the feasibility study; • Disposal concept: Surface facility with multiple barriers; • Waste inventory: Operational and decommissioning LILW-SL with limited quantities of LL radionuclides generated by 4 units at Cernavoda NPP (2 scenarios were considered: 30 and 40 years/unit lifetime); • Waste volume: 57,000m3 (scenario with 40 years lifetime/unit). • Development features: Staged development of the repository considering the characteristics of the construction works on loess soil and further development of new units on Cernavoda NPP site 14

  16. Partial siting license for Saligny Repository Partial siting license allows ANDRAD: • to continue the completion of site characterization, • to apply for the environmental agreement, • to launch the urban development documentation, and • to buy the land if considered by ANDRAD. 16

GEOLOGICAL DISPOSAL IN ROMANIA • Support studies related to site selection • 1992 – 1994: area survey, with six geological formations analyzed (green schists, granite, basalt, clays, salt and volcanic tuff) • 1997 - 1998: 2 drillings and geophysical investigations for several formations (granite, green schists) • Potential host rock formations: salt (4), tuff (1), green schists (5), granite (3) • Conceptual repository design • Standard concept for a deep geological repository • Safety assessment studies for generic repositories in rock salt and granite • R&D national programs • NATO sponsored cooperations • ANDRAD has proposed a TCP with IAEA on site selection for deep geological repository
