  2. Historical Understandings SS3H1: Our Political Roots The student will explain the political roots of our modern democracy in the United States of America. Element: SS3H1.b Explain the ancient Athenians' idea that a community should choose its own leaders. Element: SS3H1.c Compare and contrast Athens as a direct democracy with the United States as a representative democracy. Element: SS3H1.a Identify the influence of Greek architecture (columns on the Parthenon, U.S. Supreme Court building), law, and the Olympic Games on the present.

  3. Geographic Understandings SS3G1: U.S. Topographical Features The student will locate major topographical features. Element: SS3G1.c Locate the equator, prime meridian, and lines of latitude and longitude on a globe. Element: SS3G1.d Locate Greece on a world map.

KEY VOCABULARY Acropolis – a flat topped rock outside Athens where the Parthenon was built. architecture – how things are built. assembly – a group of citizens in ancient Greece who voted on laws. astronomy – the study of planets and the universe. Athens – the leading city-state in Ancient Greece. citizens – the people who live in a place and can make their own laws. city-state – Cities in ancient Greece that governed themselves. columns – structures built by the Greeks to hold up huge stone roofs. Constitution of the United States of America – a document that explained how democracy would work in America. Declaration of Independence – A document that said that Americans would be independent from England and make their own laws. democracy– the rule of the people. direct democracy – the form of government in ancient Greece where every citizen voted on laws. elect– to choose by voting.

VOCABULARY CONTINUED… Equator – the line of latitude that circles the globe exactly halfway between the North and South poles. heritage – our way of life. ideals – the things we believe. latitude – the lines that cross the globe horizontally. longitude – the lines that cross the globe vertically. Olympic Games – A sports competition that started in ancient Greece. Parthenon – A grand temple built with columns. Prime Meridian – a vertical line that passes through Greenwich, England. represent – to speak for someone else. representative democracy – the form of government in America when the people elect leaders to represent them and make laws. tax – Money people pay to support the government. vote - to make decisions about laws or choose someone to represent you.

DEMOCRACY • The people of Athens believed that they should VOTE and make their own laws. • This is called DEMOCRACY. • In Greek, democracy means: “the rule of the people” Read pages 1-12 in the Book: Greece and our American Heritage What are some ways we can be a democracy in our classroom? At home? With your friends?

  10. Direct Democracy • Let’s choose something to vote on in class. • Everyone gets to VOTE! • The majority (the most votes) wins! • This is called a DIRECT DEMOCRACY because everyone gets a chance to vote.

  11. REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY • At each table, elect one person, a representative, for your group. • The group should let the representative know how to vote for their table. • The representative will now vote on behalf of the whole table. • Was the outcome the same? Why or why not?

OLYMPIC FACTS • The Olympic Games date back to 776 B.C. • The ancient games were held in the sanctuary of Olympia in Greece as a way to honor the Greek gods. • The first Olympics were just a footrace. Eventually other sports were added, including the long jump, javelin, boxing and equestrian events. • At the ancient Olympics, only males were allowed to participate. If a woman was married, she was forbidden from viewing the ancient Olympics. • Winners of events were not given medals but rather were awarded an olive leaf wreath, which symbolized hope and peace.
