Changes between Solid and Liquid • Melting- solid  liquid • At its melting point, particles of a solid substance are vibrating so fast that they break free from their fixed positions. • Melting point of pure water = 0oC • Increase in thermal energy • Freezing- liquid  solid • At its freezing point, the particles of a liquid are moving so slowly that they begin to form regular patterns • Freezing point of pure water = 0oC • Decrease in thermal energy

Changes between Liquid and Gas • Vaporization- liquid  gas • Increase in thermal energy • Evaporation- vaporization on the surface • Ex: disappearing puddle of water • Boiling- vaporization below and at the surface • Ex: when liquid bubbles • Boiling point- temperature at which liquid boils • Boiling point changes with Air Pressure • Condensation- gas  liquid • Ex: breathing onto a mirror, formation of clouds • Decrease in thermal energy
