  2. Subphylum Crustacea • only group of arthropods that is primarily aquatic • examples: crayfish,lobster,shrimp, barnacles, isopods (pill bugs), crabs (not horseshoe) Balanus Barnacles Crayfish

  3. Body Structure: • 2 pairs of antennae • carapace: Cuticle of head extends posteriorly and around sides (Cephalothorax) (exoskeleton = CaCO3 calcium carbonate) Mantis Shrimp

  4. Appendages: • Swimmerets: small abdominal legs • Cheliped: 1st pair of walking legs; • has pinching claw • 3.Uropod: last pair; acts as rudder, jet backwards very fast! • Respiration: Gills • Excretion: Green glands Deep Water Shrimp Yellow Crab

  5. 2. Subphylum Uniramia • A. Class: Chilopoda - Centipedes- • Long body with many segments (flattened) • First segment has claws • Claws inject poison into prey • (predators!) • *One pair of legs per segment! • Carnivorous Scolopendra Centipede

  6. B. Class Diplopoda • Millipedes- • * Exude noxious chemicals • (defense) • Long body with many segments (cylindrical) • No poison claws: • TWO pairs of legs per segment • Herbivores, detritivores (eat garbage) • * Eat dead plant material Yellow spotted Millipede
