  2. What is Fast For Hope? Fast for Hope is the only District-wide initiative that generates resources and engages the District in a focused effort Historically, each year the focus was on a different project, but In 2006, Jeffry Sachs’ inspiring presentation at an RI convention on eradicating poverty led Rotarians to embrace the opportunity to embark on a long term program to create systemic change in a community

  3. Define “sustainable development” • When we talk about sustainable development what does that mean to you? • Take a minute and think about that and when you are ready, we’d like you to share a few of your thoughts to the group

  6. Managua National Capital Masaya Departmental Capital A New Model for D5960 • In 2007, a delegation traveled to Nicaragua, to assess the viability of the country to determine if it fit the criteria established by the FFH Committee and informed by experts.

  7. The Nicaragua Initiative • Why Nicaragua? • Second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere • Ease of access • Safety • Transportation • Cost of transportation • Availability of accommodations • Political stability • Culture and language

  8. A New Model for D5960 Kairos Staff Through a deliberate process, the Kairos School in Managua was selected as a partner that would serve as our feet on the ground in Nicaragua.

  9. Hopes For The Nicaraguan Initiative • Long term sustainable development (hand up, not hand out) • Recognition of cultural similarities and differences • Wide ranging impact on all participants

  14. Community Selection • Throughout the past year, Kairos has been working with El Corozo to build capacity • Following the needs assessment of several communities, El Corozo was selected as the community.

  15. A Shared Vision EmergedAmongst the Partners Through accompaniment, partners that desire to achieve a sustainable, healthy and economically secure environment, participate in processes of development.

  16. A Paradigm Shift Rather than identifying what WE think the community needs and providing “it”; we work with the people building capacity within the community and empowering THEM to take responsibility for determining their greatest needs and providing solutions

Nicaragua Initiative – Moving Forward • Cultural delegations & Leadership development • Be part of the “International” of Rotary International • More time and interaction in El Corozo • Your participation is critical in the FFH poverty eradication efforts • Annually, D5960 averages 39K for FFH
