  2. Overview • What is Arthritis? • OA and RA • What are the risk factors? • How can I help prevent?

What is Arthritis? • Arthritis literally means inflammation of the joint • Arthritis is the most common form of disability in America, about 1 in 5 Americans with doctor diagnosed arthritis • Arthritis can affect any joint; but the most common are hips, knees, hands, and spine • Osteoarthritis & Rheumatoid are the most common, but arthritis can be caused by many different things

  4. RA & OA • Osteoarthritis • “wear and tear’ • Cartilage deteriorates from use, injury, or infection causing bone on bone contact and inflammation • Very painful and stiff joints

  5. RA & OA • Rheumatoid Arthritis • Body’s immune system attacks the lining of the joint capsule causing (synovial membrane) inflammation and pain. • This can lead to cartilage damage

  6. Symptoms • The inflammation of the joint causes • Pain • Stiffness • Redness • Swelling • Decreased range of motion

  7. Risk Factors • Family History • Age, risk increases with age • Sex, Female • Previous joint injury • Obesity

  8. Treatments & Management • There is no cure, only management options • Medications • Physical Therapy • Surgery • Acupuncture • Lifestyle management • Exercise & Yoga • Weight-loss • Assistive devices (walker, cane) • Heat and cold compresses to relieve pain

  9. Prevention • Educate yourself on preventing joint injury; like proper lifting of heavy objects, warm-up and cool-downs, stretching • Exercise regularly and weight control

  10. Summary • Arthritis is a chronic disease that can affect any joint in your body • Prevention is the best medicine as there is no cure • Know your risk factors! • Talk with your doctor about ways to manage or prevent arthritis
