  1. Enhancing L2 Reading through Effective Use of Hypertext 李一芬 Emmie Li

  2. Research Purpose • To evaluate the effectiveness of the computer-assisted mode of learning with regards to English reading proficiency • To investigate the potential factors that influence students’ second language learning through computer-assisted patterns.

  3. Rationale • The Process of Reading • The Integration of Computers with Language Teaching and Learning

  4. Rationale The Process of Reading • Reading was seen as a combination of lower-level process and higher-level process by researchers such as Bernhardt (1991), Chun and Plass (1997), Grellet (1981), and Swaffar, Arens and Byrnes (1991).

  5. Rationale Computers and Language Learning • By integrating new technologies with teaching methods, improved efficiency and positive changes were found in the learning process, especially for • vocabulary acquisition (Cobb, 1999), • conversation analysis (Negretti, 1990), • listening comprehension (Hoven, 1999), etc.

  6. Methodology • Materials Description Print-oriented materials Computer-oriented materials • Questionnaire Confidence Preferred Approach Attitude Jokes

  7. Methodology • Participants PO (the control group, with print-oriented materials) CO (the experimental group, with computer-oriented materials)

  8. Results and Discussion • Both groups performed equivalently in vocabulary acquisition. • CO group had a better result in text comprehension.

  9. Means of Confidence by Modes between pre- and post-test Confidence in Learning English Results and Discussion • PO group displayed a higher degree of increase in confidence

  10. Preferred Approach for Learning English Results and Discussion • The multimedia programs were highly ranked by both groups. • Students with lower confidence tend to mark each one with a comparatively high score.

  11. Conclusion • A multimedia-enhanced learning programme does not adversely affect the development of language skills but in actual fact enhances the learning itself. • Students are highly motivated for the computer-assisted learning program, which is considered as the dominant factor to practice the program successfully.
