9/6/13 Objective: How do you know something is living? Do Now: Put your signed syllabus in drop box (just 2nd page)
Task • With your designated partner, observe the living organism assigned to you. • Write down 4 characteristics that tell you that the organism in the tank are living. • You will have only 5 minutes, so work efficiently.
Characteristics of Living Things 1. Consist of cells - basic unit of structure and function 2. Respond to the Environment - Maintain homeostasis (organisms regulate their internal envt despite changes in external envt.) 3. Obtain and use energy - 2 ways to obtain energy: 1. Producers: Make their own food using energy from the sun (plants) 2. Consumers: Consume (eat) food
Characteristics of Living Things • 4. Grow and develop • - Form fits function: the shape of a structure is determined by its function (ex?) 5. Reproduce - Pass on their genetic information through DNA 6. Adapt to the environment (Evolve)
Activity Task: With your partner from earlier, revisit your lists and revise them. You should include: 1. 4 (correct) characteristics that tell you the organism is living and explain. 2. Write down 3 things in the tank/area that are not living and explain 2 reasons why. 3. Explain how the living things rely on those non living things for survival. 4. Write down 5 questions that a scientist may want to “know” about the living thing in the tank. *You will turn this in for a grade, so be sure to put your name(s) on your paper
