Schizophrenics have disordered thoughts and speech • Disorders of Form • Incoherent, does not follow normal rules • Loose associations (word Salad) • Neologisms (made up words) • Disorders of Content • Delusions • Prosecutorial - “out to get me” • Somatic - something wrong with body • Grandeur - belief of being especially important • Control - external control

  4. Schizophrenics have Disorders of Perception and Attention • Derealization • Body doesn’t feel real to them • Hallucinations • Exaggerated sensory experiences • Hearing voices • Running commentary • Associated with activity in auditory cortex

  5. Schizophrenics can have motor and affect disturbances • Motor Disturbances • Catatonic or Mania • Behavioral disorganization • Poor hygiene, inappropriate dress (layers of clothes) • Inappropriate behavior • Affective Disturbances • Flat or inappropriate affect • Avoid eye contact • Agitated and excessive emotion

Some Causes? • Swollen ventricles • Indicates reduction in brain matter • Frontal Lobe Abnormalities • Difficulty with frontal lobe tasks • Dopamine Hypothesis • Overactive response of the dopamine system • Linked to positive symptoms • Neuroleptics work on dopamine system • By blocking dopamine
