  3. NHMRC Background: funding schemes • Major funding schemes are: • Project grants (1-5 years) • Partnership Grants - involves partner organisation(s) • Fellowships • Initiatives “Enabling Grants and other special projects” • For a full list see http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/grants/types/list.htm

How to get funding from the NHMRC • Define the magnitude problem • Present the AIMS • Provide detailed and precise background • Give rationales for your approach • Provide the methods you will use • Ensure appropriate statistical thought has been put into the project • Provide an realistic time frame for the project

  5. Average Project Grant lasts 3 years • Most PGs last 3 years and ask for ~$200-400K per year • There is recognition that some grants are expensive • Some PGs can go over $2.0M (in a 3 year period)

  6. Project Grants: what you can ask for and what you get. • Many PGs fall into a relatively simple mix of funding, this equates to: • Several research Associate (Level A6) at ~$80,000 pa (number is dependent on project). • Generally, Lab Consumables at $20,000 pa. • Lab consumables, as long as they are justified can go much higher (>$1.0M)

  7. NHMRRC awards one line budgets • Make sure you have adequately justified your budget. • Do not over-inflate it – it will be cut.

  8. How grants get reviewed : (1) what you see March SUBMIT GRANT JUNE RECEIVE COMMENTS FROM UP TO 3 REVIEWERS – ONE IS A PANEL MEMBER AUGUST PANEL RANKS ALL PROPOSALS AND RECOMMENDATIONS GO FORWARD. ALL GRANTS WITH 6 OR MORE WILL GET FUNDED October RECEIVE NOTIFICATION

  9. Rejoinder • You will see the detailed comments of all assessors • Always respond to comments – do not worry about obviously biased assessors – the panel does note this.

  10. Maximize chances of funding • Get to know your peers • Write concisely • Do not “stuff” in too much information • Do not aim for the impossible and relate it to YOUR track record
