  3. Common places of Satire • Political cartoons • Newspaper/magazine columns • “Daily Show” or “Colbert Report” • Cartoons such as “Family Guy” “Simpsons” or “South Park” • Saturday Night Live • Movie such as “Shrek,” “Monty Python,” “Easy A,” “The Hangover” • IT’S EVERYWHERE!

  4. Four Types of Satire • Exaggeration • Incongruity • Parody • Reversal

  5. Exaggeration • To enlarge or represent something beyond the normal bounds • Makes the subject appear ridiculous and exposes faults • Examples: caricatures, the extremely annoying voice of Peter Griffin

  6. Incongruity • Present things out of place- in a location or environment that does not make sense for the object or idea • Makes something look absurd because of its environment

  7. Parody • Imitation in order to ridicule • In order to make sense, the audience must be aware of the original • Example: “Saturday Night Live” skits of fake commercials;

  8. Reversal • The opposite of the normal order • Order of events, ex: dessert before dinner • Hierarchy– ex: the baby makes all the decisions in the family  Family Guy • Roles- ex: gender roles, family roles,
