MARYLAND • Maryland is one of the leading states in providing access to higher education to its residents through a variety of focused practices and programs, which link student access to student success. Maryland maintains an ongoing commitment to ensuring equal access and opportunity for all, and ensuring that our graduates have an understanding of their rights and responsibilities as engaged citizens.

  4. Maryland Higher Education Outreach and College Access Program • State grant program that provides funds to college access focused nonprofits with a focus on increasing college and career awareness and college completion for low-income Maryland high school students.

  5. Complete College Maryland – One Step Away Grant • The purpose of One Step Away is to increase college completion rates by providing associate and bachelor’s degree-granting Maryland institutions with funds to identify, contact, re-enroll, and graduate near-completer students. • Near-completers are those students who have earned 75% or more credits toward an associate or bachelor’s degree, or may have enough credits for an associate or bachelor’s degree, but have stopped-out or dropped-out for 12 months or longer without obtaining a degree.

  6. College Preparation Intervention Program (CPIP) • Overview: The College Preparation Intervention Program (CPIP) is a State grant program which supports Maryland’s college access and completion goals as defined in the State’s 2017-2021 State Plan for Postsecondary Education, and the College and Career Readiness and College Completion Act of 2013. • Purpose: CPIP funding provides financial support and fosters collaboration between Maryland’s high need local education agencies (LEA) and its higher education institutions to raise the level of academic preparedness of economically and environmentally disadvantaged students to enable them to attend, persist, and succeed in college. • Target Population and Eligibility: GEAR UP districts, and counties the met eligibility based on the criteria outlined below: • Free And Reduced Meals (FARM); • Met and exceeded expectations in Algebra 1 PARCC; • Met and exceeded expectations in English 10 PARCC; • Remediation rate (greater than) state average; • High school graduation rate (by county); • Bachelor degrees (by county).

  7. College Preparation Intervention Program (CPIP) • Service Regions: GEAR UP school districts • Baltimore City, • Dorchester County, • and Wicomico County. • In addition, Prince George’s County met eligibility for FY2018 funding cycle. • FY2017 Grantees: • Chesapeake College, • Johns Hopkins University, • Salisbury University, • University of Maryland Baltimore, • University of Maryland College Park, • and University of Maryland Eastern Shore. • Funded Activities: Summer enrichment programs, In-School workshops, embedded and after school tutoring, Saturday workshops, college tours, SAT/ACT prep. • FY2017 Awarding: $908,658

Maryland GEAR UP Leadership Development Program (LDP) • Overview: The Maryland Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) Leadership Development Program supports the advance of leadership curricula, plans and activities designed to help students understand their core values, leadership skills, strengths, and goal-setting for future career plans. Moreover, students are encouraged to examine their interest and hone their leadership capacities by improving their communication and analytical skills. • Purpose: The GEAR UP Leadership Development Program supports Maryland’s GEAR UP goals and objectives to increase the number of economically disadvantaged students who intended to pursue postsecondary education. Funded activities are intended to provide summer enrichment, skill-building, and inclusive programming to secondary GEAR UP students, while educating students and their families about the advantage of postsecondary education and college financing options. • Funded Activities: Applicants may choose (2) or more of the following activities: • Application Workshops; • Counseling, Advising, and Career Counseling; • Comprehensive Mentoring; • Self-Discovery/Career Exploration Workshops; • Project Leadership and Management; • Ideation, Innovation, and Brainstorming Sessions; • Communication Effectiveness Workshops; • Cross-Cultural Leadership and Diversity Workshops. • Award Amount: Up to $45,000 per institution.

Community Events • Statewide outreach (i.e., general financial aid, scholarships, college planning) • FAFSA Completion Campaign • The FAFSA Completion Initiative is an initiative that allows high school districts, high schools, local educational agencies (LEAs), and certain designated entities access to limited but valuable FAFSA information for Maryland students.

Community Events • College Application Campaign • MSDE Administers • September 24 – October 26, 2018 • The college campaign provides hands-on assistance to high school students with the college application and FAFSA completion process, ensuring that each participating student submits at least one postsecondary application • Completion Summit
