  2. Date it became a state • Maryland became a state on April 28, 1788. • It was the 7th of the original 13 colonies to become astate. April 28, 1788!

  5. State Flower • Maryland’s state flower is the Black-Eyed Susan.

  6. State seal The state seal has the flag of Maryland, their motto, and a verse from the bible. Also, it holds a fisherman and a farmer.

  7. State tree Maryland’s state tree is the White Oak.

  8. State song • “Maryland, My Maryland!” • This song was written by James Ryder Randall. • It was originally written as a poem and was set to the tune “Oh Christmas Tree.” • The lyrics are about Maryland’s history, geography, and historical figures.

  9. State flag Maryland’s state flag is made up of the family crest of the Calvert and Crossland families. The black and gold belongs to the Cecil Calvert family, who founded Maryland and the red and white design belong to the Crossland family which was Cecil’s mother’s maiden name.

  15. Capital of the state • The capital of Maryland is Annapolis. Annapolis is important historically since it was once the capital of the United States. Also, since it’s located on the Chesapeake Bay, Annapolis is an important port.
