  1. Warm-up: Use your notes to answer the following: 1.What is the significance of Marbury V. Madison? 2. What is the significance of Worcester V. Georgia? Significance means importance!

  2. Marbury V. Madison • When: 1803 • Chief Justice: John Marshall • “midnight judges”, appointments, anger, Jefferson took office • Outcome: the judiciary branch reviews all branches to make sure the laws are constitutional – judicial review

  3. Worcester V. Georgia • Who – Samuel Worchester fought for the Cherokee Indians • What – A Supreme Court Case • When - 1832 • Where – State of Georgia • Why – Georgia did not recognize their sovereign status, but saw them as tenants living on state land • Outcome – Chief Justice John Marshall ruled in favor of the Indians, they could stay and did not have to move. Pres. Jackson said, “John Marshall has made his decision, now let him enforce it.”

  27. Northwest Ordinance Requirements To become a state: • 5,000 men requirement who owned at least 50 acres • Had to have 60,000 people • Have an established self-government

Physical Characteristics that influenced population distribution • Pacific Ocean – allowed Asians to immigrate to California during the Gold Rush • Gold – Population increased as settlers looked for gold • Rocky Mountains – barrier between East and West. Led to Gadsden Purchase that enabled a railroad to be built.
