  1. Synthesis • A + B → AB • Two or more elements or compounds combine to form a single new compound • Examples H2 + O2→ H2O CO + O2 → CO2 CaO + H2O → Ca(OH)2

  2. Decomposition • AB → A + B • Single compound breaks down into two or more simpler substances • Catalyst – substance that speeds up a reaction without altering it

  3. Decomposition Examples • HgO → Hg + O2 • NaCl → Na + Cl2

  4. Combustion Reactions • Hydrocarbon- compound of C, H and sometimes O • Hydrocarbons combine with oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water • Examples CH4 + O2→ CO2 + H2O C2H8+ O2→ CO2 + H2O C6H12O6+ O2→ CO2 + H2O

  5. Determine What Type of Reaction Each Is, Complete, and Balance • H2 + O2→ • Na + Cl2→ • Al2O3→ • C12H24 + O2→ • CO → • NH3 + HCl → • CCl4→
