  1. The Backslider Genesis 19:12-22

  2. 12 Then the men said to Lot, “Have you anyone else here? Son-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and whomever you have in the city—take them out of this place!

  3. 13 For we will destroy this place, because the outcry against them has grown great before the face of the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it.”

  4. 14 So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who had married his daughters, and said,

  5. “Get up, get out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city!” But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking.

  6. 15 When the morning dawned, the angels urged Lot to hurry, saying, “Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city.”

  7. 16 And while he lingered, the men took hold of his hand, his wife’s hand, and the hands of his two daughters, the Lord being merciful to him,

  8. and they brought him out and set him outside the city.

  9. 17 So it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that he said, “Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain.

  10. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed.”

  11. 18 Then Lot said to them, “Please, no, my lords!

  12. 19 Indeed now, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have increased your mercy which you have shown me by saving my life;

  13. but I cannot escape to the mountains, lest some evil overtake me and I die.

  14. 20 See now, this city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one; please let me escape there (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.”

  15. 21 And he said to him, “See, I have favored you concerning this thing also, in that I will not overthrow this city for which you have spoken.

  16. 22 Hurry, escape there. For I cannot do anything until you arrive there.” Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.

  17. 1 Corinthians 3:14-15 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward.

  18. 15 If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.

  19. I. The Choice He Made:

  20. Gen. 13:10-12 10 And Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere (before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah)

  21. like the garden of theLord, like the land of Egypt as you go toward Zoar.

  22. 11 Then Lot chose for himself all the plain of Jordan, and Lot journeyed east. And they separated from each other.

  23. II. The Position He Occupied:

  24. II. The Position He Occupied Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom.

  25. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground.

  26. Psalm 1:1 Blessed is the manWho walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,

  27. Nor stands in the path of sinners,    Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;

  28. III. The Message He Received:

  29. Genesis 19:13 For we will destroy this place, because the outcry against them has grown great before the face of the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it.”

  30. IV. The Testimony He Bore:

  31. Genesis 19:2 And he said, “Here now, my lords, please turn in to your servant’s house and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way.”

  32. And they said, “No, but we will spend the night in the open square.”

  33. Genesis 19:14 So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who had married his daughters, and said, “Get up, get out of this place;

  34. for the Lord will destroy this city!” But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking.

  35. V. The Request He Made:

  36. Genesis 19:20 See now, this city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one; please let me escape there (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.”

  37. Genesis 19:30 Then Lot went up out of Zoar and dwelt in the mountains, and his two daughters were with him; for he was afraid to dwell in Zoar. And he and his two daughters dwelt in a cave.

  38. VII. The Favor He Enjoyed:

  39. Genesis 19:22 Hurry, escape there. For I cannot do anything until you arrive there.” Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.
