  1. Figuring out Figurative Language • Starring Shreeky

  2. Our scouts have informed me that we are about to be under attack. And if you don’t figure out figurative language quickly, the Care Bears will destroy us all with their kindness! The Care Bears are preparing an assault.

  3. We hate kindness and remember it is us, cruel people, that know how to use language to control the world . . . how to use language to destroy hugs and hearts! Let us use words, like magic spells, to control.

  4. Figurative Language Figurative language creates a special effect or feeling in the reading. This occurs when we describe something by comparing it to something else, exaggerate, or use language that may or may not mean something. Did someone say special feelings?

  5. When we talk about figures of speech, we talk about figurative language. figurative language figures of speech

  6. Eew ! Not that kind of Um, why am I the only Care Bear that is not a bear? I am lonely :(

  7. A figure of speech is a device that creates a special effect. The six figures of speech we need to destroy the Care Bears are simile, metaphor, analogy, personification, hyperbole, and onomatopoeia. FOCUS OR WE WILL BE CORRUPTED BY HAPPY THOUGHTS!

  8. OMG!

  9. Comparisons in Figurative Language Simile: Comparing two things using the words “like” or “as”. Metaphor: Comparing two things using a form of “to be”. Analogy: Similarity between like features of two things.

  10. Comparisons in Figurative Language Simile: Care Bears are like giant walking hairballs that my cat coughed up. Metaphor: Care Bears are the acid rain of television. Analogy: Think of Wikipedia's community of volunteer editors as a family of Care Bears left to roam freely over abundantly magically magical clouds. As they chill on the clouds, their magic absurdly grows. More Care Bears consume more magic, though, and at some point, the clouds becomes depleted, and their magic fizzles out. Instead of magic, Wikipedia's natural resource is emotion.

  11. Comparisons with Metaphors The Conjugation of “to be” Present Past 1st person singular I am was 2nd person singular you are were was 3rd person singular he/she/it is were 1st person plural we are 2nd person plural you are were 3rd person plural they are were

  12. Comparisons in Figurative Language Their magic is getting stronger, we must practice comparisons.

  13. Personification Giving human characteristics to something nonhuman. The flowers danced in the Care Bears’ hand.

  14. Hyperbole An exaggeration The Care Bear dropped a thousand hearts. 1 2 3 5 4 6 7 8 9

  15. Personification in Figurative Language They have rainbow magic and Easter eggs, we must practice personification or we’re doomed.

  16. Onomatopoeia A word that is spelt how it sounds. Growl. Uh, I mean oink. Hairy pigs say oink.

  17. Prepare to be corrupted by happy feelings! Yeah! Neophytes. I love love.

  18. Let’s see if this training has paid off.

  19. So beautiful.

  20. Hyperbole The Care Bear hugged me like a human. Personification His thoughts are clouds floating in the sun. Metaphor The cauldron sat on the floor. Simile The Care Bear fell to the ground with a thud. Onomatopoeia Shreeky’s smile lit up the room.
