  1. Drug ABUSE

  2. Thesis statement • The harmful effects of Meth on the environment are

  3. Contents • Of the 32 Ingredients of Meth, One third of them are extremely toxic to the body & the environment.

  4. Contents • Sodium hydroxide • Anhydrous Ammonia • Iodine • Matches - Red Phosphorus • Ephedrine • Ether • Drano • Brake Fluid • Lighter Fluid – Butane • Hydrochloric acid

  5. Contents • Many of the contents are flammable, explosive & corrosive.

  6. contents • For every pound of Meth produced; 6 pounds of toxic waste is generated.

  7. Clean up • Clean up costs often exceed $100,000.

  8. The environment • In a meth location, there’s no guarantee that the environment in which said placed will ever be fit to rein habit.

  9. The property • The chemicals & fumes cause permanent damage to the walls, carpets, plaster & wood around a meth lab as well as the surrounding soil.

  10. The property • Because of the property & liability risks, counties don’t even bother to confiscate the property.

  11. The property • Lieutenant Andrew Tafoya of Apache County says, “ I would rather investigate a homicide than a meth lab. These labs are a logistical & environmental nightmare.”

  12. Environmental problems • These labs also find their way into nearby streams and ground water & poison the water ways.

  13. Other Consequnces • Over or under heating or improper mixing can generate toxic by-products, in which chemicals become a threat to all who comes in contact with them when they are released into the air, septic systems, streams, or soil or when they permeate furniture, carpets, or air vents.

  14. Clandestine Labs • Clandestine Labs have been placed in different areas; when in operation, these laboratories present a high risk of fire and toxic gas releases.

  15. Clandestine Labs • These labs are extremely dangerous; these labs also expose cooks. Their children, & their neighbors to toxic substances.

  16. Clandestine Labs • States have felt that the brunt of the epidemic of drug labs have developed the most comprehensive response. Officials must do a complete assessment of the property.

  17. Effects • When the simple removal of hazardous materials is not enough to allow normal occupancy, then sites must be thoroughly decontaminated.

  18. Effects • The owner of the site is usually responsible for the cost, which is so high that many landlords and homeowners choose to abandon the property.

  19. effects • Explosions that can occur while “rooking” a batch of meth can destroy homes, take lives, and create environmental waste sites the require specialized clean up.

  20. Meth • Meth has all sorts of different effects on your environment that could take it toll on us and animals.
