Drug Abuse- taking legal drugs for reasons other than those intended or using controlled substances illegally • interferes with normal everyday activity Multi Substance Abuse- abuse of two or more drugs Recreational Drug Use- term made up by drug abusers who claim their drug taking produces no harmful health effects. This term is not defined nor accepted by the FDA.

Addictive personality Excessive- using more than normal limit Impulsive-careless or spontaneous Compulsive-becomes an obsession Heredity- genetic predisposition Peer Pressure Mental/ Emotional reasons Focus attention on self Fun and excitement To escape Substitute for money or love Pride in being different Low self-esteem Nature of the drug Level of Euphoria produced Why Abuse Drugs

Stage of Addiction • Experimentation • person is tempted to do the drug and tries it • Desired effect • Person enjoys the feeling he or she gets from trying the drug and continues to use • Tolerance • Person develops a tolerance to the drug, but it may no longer have same pleasurable effects • Person may suffer from withdrawal symptoms when he or she stops using • Denial • Person is in denial of the problem and does not admit that drug use is causing problems. • Person claims they can stop anytime • Drug Dependence • Person has become drug dependent and realizes it

Legal Aspects • Tolerant Societies – societies that encourage use • Laws • Controlled Substances Act (1970) • Federal legislation concerning marijuana (2004) • Penalties • Summary Offense- Fine only • Underage Drinking • Misdemeanors- Fine, Jail, Criminal Record • Possession of drug • Felonies- Fine, Jail and C. R. –most serious • Possession with intent to deliver • Sale, delivery, manufacturing • Juvenile System-record does not follow after 18-sealed
