My Elementary Reading Experience Maria Reece C&I 449 Summer 2010
The Early Years My mother and father said I was not a reader prior to school. I loved to hear others read to me, but my skills were more in playing or socializing than reading. My older sister would read to me, I was told. I really have no recollection of this at all. I loved bunnies and she often read the Beatrix Potter books to me.
Entering School Going to school was important to me as I was the last child of 4. My mother was a stay at home mom, but everyone was in school except me and I could not wait. I loved this book about Morris and can remember that I read it over and over and over. I think my brother colored on Morris’s nose. It would be something he would do to me.
A Few More Memories These three books seemed to stick with me during my early grades. Seeing as I was not a strong reader, I chose the easier books, but enjoyed reading them more than once. My mom feels that was a comfort level of mine.
Reading Came Alive in 3rd and 4th Grade In 3rd grade we had a Forensics contest in our school. I was entranced with the Amelia Bedelia series and entered the contest in retelling these stories. I do not have my original book, I wish I did. I loved her crazy ways and how she mixed up words. Perhaps she was a lot like me, in some ways. Hours of practice and lots of effort was put forth to memorize this book. For the Forensic contest I had retell it with expression in a specific timeframe. I won first place two years in a row! It was a highlight of those two years. I remember my school librarian working closely with all students who were in the contest. She was nice and always gave us feedback that would help us. Beyond that, I don’t remember much else of her or her role.
5th Grade and Beyond Math seemed to become my struggle in school at this point and I do not recall enjoying school much at all. I do have a glimpse liking non-fiction at this time in my reading journey. It was my 4th grade teacher who brought non-fiction books to my attention. Looking back, I would have to say my 4th grade year was a turning point in my reading education. My teacher was the best. I know it is because of him that I am a teacher today. I read this dolphin book many times. I enjoyed talking about it with my mom. One other book my mom packed in my box of childhood memories.
Today I rarely read for pleasure. If I do read, it is a cooking magazine or articles that I find interesting. My love of literacy is helping others analyze a story, poem or other type of literature to determine the deeper meaning or author’s purpose. That is what jazzes me today and I can’t wait to have the opportunity one day, as a Media Specialist, to share that love with children visiting my library. One of the first books I will read with my 3rd grade class. What a story!
