Money/Funding Collaboration/Coordination (Providers) ID & recruitment of learners Barriers to engaging in services (transportation, child care, time of day, fear, “stigma” ID scope & nature of need Resources (facilities, staff, instructors, workbooks) Lack of public awareness Company policies limiting time-off Finding volunteer tutors Capacity building for literacy providers RESPONSESTO#1

Successful partnerships between key organizations Job placement after completing literacy training Placement of programs where learners work & live Use local media (electronic media) to advertise programs Take home translators as a bridge to conversation to then build to reading Identify special needs of participants that provide barriers to learning (learning disabilities) Flexible scheduling of literacy classes Provide incentives to learners to increase program retention Offer learning material in person’s first language LIFT, United Way programs, Gaylord Texan Program, volunteer matching. Events: Literacy Day at the Zoo, Half Price Books donation, local libraries, churches and schools. RESPONSESTO#2

Workplace literacy programs Increase service financials to provide a cushion for programs Provide more short-term goals to help students feel successful Increase public awareness – must be multi-lingual New ways to reach learners (mobile delivery – ipods, cell phones, audio books, internet learning) Establish consistent literacy standards across region Reach out to younger and diverse volunteer base Incentives to learners – community discounts Establish Central Clearinghouse of literacy information Change the mindset of learners to get them to commit to learning RESPONSESTO#4
