Air pollution Air Pollution is the human introduction into the atmosphere of chemicals, particulates, or biological materials that cause harm or discomfort to humans or other living organisms, or damage the environment.[1] Air pollution causes deaths[2] and respiratory disease.[3] Air pollution is often identified with major stationary sources, but the greatest source of emissions is actually mobile sources, mainly automobiles.[4] Gases such as carbon dioxide, which contribute to global warming, have recently gained recognition as pollutants by climate scientists, while they also recognize that carbon dioxide is essential for plant life through photosynthesis.

  3. Smog Smog is a kind of air pollution; the word "smog" is a portmanteau of smoke and fog. Classic smog results from large amounts of coal burning in an area and is caused by a mixture of smoke and sulfur dioxide.

  4. Acid rain can damage non-replaceable buildings, statues, and sculptures that are part of our nation’s memories that we want to last for a very long time. A very serious problem is the effect of acid rain on trees. Acid rain

The Ozone Hole • For nearly a billion years, ozone molecules in the atmosphere have protected life on Earth from the effects of ultraviolet rays. • In the past 60 years human activity has contributed to the deterioration of the ozone layer. Scientists have discovered holes in the ozone layer, caused by substances called CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons).

  8. CFCs are used in refrigerators, aerosol cans and in the manufacture of some plastic products. • In a year air travel releases 600 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. By the year 2050, increased flights by jet airplanes will impact global climate through the greater number of contrails they will produce. The Antarctic ozone hole

  9. Global warming Scientists say the temperature of the earth could rise by 3°C over the next 50 years. This may cause drought in some parts of the world, and floods in others, as ice at the North and South Poles begins to melt and sea levels rise. Global warming is caused by thegreenhouse effect. Normally, heat from the sun warms the earth and then escapes back into space. But carbon dioxide and other gases in the atmosphere trap the sun’s heat, and this is slowly making the earth warmer.
