  2. Objectives • To review information from textbook on globalization. • To define the term culture. • To understand the arguments for / against globalization

  3. Culture • Learned or shared behavior that is held in common by a group of people.

  4. NOT THIS!

  5. Nationalism • DEFINE: devotion and loyalty to one's own nation; patriotism. • EXAMPLES? • QUESTION: can nationalism be a “bad” thing?

  6. Ethnocentrism • DEFINE: When you believe that your culture is superior to another culture. • EXAMPLES? • Question: can ethnocentrism be a “bad” thing?

  7. The least ethnocentric man…

  9. Globalization • The economic, political, and cultural changes that are increasing the interconnectedness of people or places worldwide. • Theme of our Course. • Opinion on impact?

  10. Anti-Globalization • Economic disparities between the “Have’s” & the “Have Not’s” within countries is increasing in many countries. • Globalization has lead to the loss of unique cultural attributes of traditional societies. • E.g. Language

  11. Cultural Hybridization • Sometimes called Cultural Syncretism. • The blending of two cultures to form a new, synergistic form of culture. • EG – Indian Yuppie

  12. Pro-Globalization • The rising tide will lift all boats or economic prosperity will “trickle down” to the poorest nations. • Countries will concentrate on activities for which it is best suited. • E.g – Should Americans be making automobile?

  13. Middle • Globalization is inevitable. • Countries and people must put themselves in the best position to benefit from this phenomea. • International organizations and national governments must work together to ensure that this process is cohesive rather than disruptive.
