  1. Status of QTOR Pre-ops assembly at MIT-Bates M. Farkhondeh K. Dow, J. Kelsey and E. Ihloff Q-Weak Collaboration meeting TRIUMF, Oct 14-15, 2005 • Outline • MIT-Bates: • QTOR pre-op work plan: 2005-2008 Q-Weak collaboration meeting, TRIUMF

  2. MIT-Bates FY05-FY08 • The MIT Bates user facility completed its mission at the completion of the BLAST internal target physics program in the summer of 2005. The entire accelerator complex is transferred to MIT. • The R&E Center has been established and is engaged high priority R&D and fabrication projects for nuclear and accelerator physics. • Also proposing to DOE for several fundamentally important accelerator physics experiments using the South Hall ring. These includes THz radiation, Optical Stochastic Cooling and RF polarimeter. • A reduced but strong team of staff with about 30 physicists, engineers technicians and support has emerged from a downsizing process. A new management team has been put into place. • The Q-Weak activity is the highest priority for the R&E Lab in FY06-07. Q-Weak collaboration meeting, TRIUMF

  3. Activities of MIT-Bates R&E Center • Planned activities for FY06 (DOE funding) • QTOR pre-op • STAR upgrade • eRHIC • Polarized source R&D for eRHIC • Neutrino physics • Polarized 3He target for RHIC • Projects for FY06 (other sources of funding) • QTOR Power Supply • Vertical chicane for Hall-C Compton polarimeter • Neutron Resonance Radiography for detection of explosives • Design work for FERMI@Trieste Q-Weak collaboration meeting, TRIUMF

  4. South Hall area for Q-TOR assembly, tests and mapping High bay area for coil acceptance and individual coil assembly OOPS and OHIPS removed QTOR Pre-Op assembly at Bates Q-Weak collaboration meeting, TRIUMF

  5. Survey target Length scale • support installation • target bushing inst. • surveying: relating copper to survey Targets High Bay area Q-Weak collaboration meeting, TRIUMF

  6. Frame assembly • Survey of frame • Coil installation (1 coil at a time) • fine mechanical alignment • magnetic measurement • fine alignment • (tolerances) South Hall Floor QTOR frame and coil assembly On the South Hall floor South Hall Floor monuments Q-Weak collaboration meeting, TRIUMF

  7. QTOR Coil tasks at Bates (2006-2007) • ___________________________________________________________________ • 2006 • Coil and carrier (High Bay area) QTORBLAST • delivery Jan 1, 2006 ???? • inspection and acceptance Jan 16 • Coil carrier delivery Dec 1, 2005 • Assembly of coils and carriers (8) Feb 1-June 1 • (2 techs+ crane operator) – 1 tech is from outside • Fiducialization of individual coil/carrier(relating copper to external fiducials) • Survey using SIMS in high bay area Mar 1-June 152.5 months elapsed time • (1 tech, 1 phys) (student help) • Install and measure SH floor monuments Dec 2005-Jan 20061 month • (student help) • Calculate “ideal” coordinates of the survey targets June 20061 month • on QTOR (in reference frame of South Hall floor monuments) • Assembly of the structure (South Hall floor) • Delivery of structure components April 1, 2006 ???? • Mechanical assembly of the frame April-Aug 1, 20062.5 months • (3 techs, 1 eng, 1 phys) – techs are from outside?(student help) • Position the structure w/ respect to the floor monuments • Install one coil at a time into the frame, fine tune position • using CLASH3Dsurvey technique Aug 1-Dec 13 months • (2 techs + crane op, 1 eng, 1 phys) – 1 tech is from outside (student help) Q-Weak collaboration meeting, TRIUMF

  8. Q-Weak Coil tasks at Bates QTORBLAST • ___________________________________________________________ • 2007 • Power Tests (1 month) • Connect power supply and water Dec 1, 2006-Jan 1, 20071 month • Power coils, monitor motions optically Jan 1-Feb 1, 20071 month • (full current at least once) • Power costs: full power test for > 15 minutes (1.7 MW) require a demand charge of order 100 k$ • Magnetic Measurements (student help) • G0 mapping table to Bates, setup Dec 1, 2006 – Feb 1, 2007 • (1 phys + 0.5 tech + students) • Zero-crossing meas/fine alignment (iterate) Feb 1- April 13 months • (1 phys + 0.5 tech + students) (primarily low current; last measurement at full current) • (power supply not always on) • Sector measurements: ( ∫Bdl on central ray) April 1 – May 12 months • (1 phys + 0.2 tech + 3 students/outside phys) (2 sectors, 35k points) • 1 week setup per 4m x 4m x 2m of coverage • 20-30 seconds per point of measurement (move ~5cm between points) • Enough points measured to confirm theoretical calculations • (full current, 24/7 during measurements) • Fiducialization of assembly June1-July 11 month • (1 phys + 1 tech + student) • Disassemble and Crate (Sep-Oct 2007) • 2 months (3 techs, 1 eng) Don’t want to ship in winter Delivery date: late fall 2007 without extensive magnetic measurements Q-Weak collaboration meeting, TRIUMF

  9. Power costs for QTOR Power tests • There is a “demand charge” by the Middleton electric company charge for exceeding a threshold in the power consumption for > 15 minutes. The new demand charge must be paid for the next 12 months at 70% of the new maximum. • QTOR at full current: 1.7 MW • Bates present level: 0.7 MW • New threshold: 1.0 MW • Demand charge: ~ 100 k$ (if on for > 15 minutes.) • Should add the energy cost to the total. • example: 1 months at full power : ~ 117 k$ • a possibility: reduce Bates consumption to 0.5 MW and run the coil at ½ max current. No demand charge. • need to think this through. We will attempt to renegotiate with Middleton Electric. Q-Weak collaboration meeting, TRIUMF

  10. QTOR Tasks Q-Weak collaboration meeting, TRIUMF

  11. QTOR tasks (summary) Q-Weak collaboration meeting, TRIUMF

  12. QTOR Pre-op tasks at Bates • Issues: • Manpower Bates in FY06-Fy07 R&E Lab activities for QTOR pre-op may compete with other projects. We welcome help from students, postdoc and scientists within the collaboration for the assembly, survey & alignment and magnetic mapping. • Tolerances for alignment needs to be specified. • Extent of magnetic measurement program needs to be defined. • Will use G0 mapping table as the main tool with the MIT mapping table as backup.
