  3. Causes of the Depression The twenties saw a boom in consumer spending and credit. As people began to but more durable good such as cars, and refrigerators production began to peter off. Due to the fact that people did not need multiples of these items. Causing a brief recession in 1920s

  4. Problems continue to build Not heeding these signs the government continued to make it easier for banks to take out loans. The hope was to stimulate the economy. Individuals with excess cash began investing in stock. During the time the market moved in spurts of success.

  5. People continued to spend on speculative stocks Major companies gave money to brokers, who allowed other people to buy stock on margin. Margin: Paying a percentage of a stocks actual price. Prices considered to soar even though only a minority of the country was actually invested.

  6. Falter October 24 1929 or black Thursday, rising stock prices faltered, and nervous investors began to sell. People lost their investments over night Banks were forced to curtail lending which hurt those who paid on credit.

  7. Unemployment By 1932 the unemployment in the country grew to 25 percent. The unemployed stood in lines for hours looking for relief check. Some left the city for the country, but still found little hope.

  8. Hoover and Voluntarism Hoover who had a lot of promise as a President was unprepared for the depression. He told the public good things are right around the corner as he supported rugged individualism. Rugged Individualism: the belief that Americans could improve their own standing if they worked hard. He pushed fro charities to give relief, but refused to provide federal funding when supplies ran out.

  9. Taking action As Hoover saw his attempts fall apart he began to take action to change the economy. Loaned money to cooperatives and bought access crops. Created the RFC to help banks. Pushed for the cutting of taxes and built the Hoover dam.

Loosing Face Two marches in particular brought struggle into Hoover’s campaign The hunger march The Bonus march Hunger March: Residents of Oklahoma began looting groceries stores until a group tried to rally them together This group marched on Washington only to be corralled and denied their rights.

  11. Bonus Marches Congress passes a law stating that each veteran of WWI would receive a thousand dollar bonus Veterans march in hope of receiving early payment There were around 15,000 veterans camped out in Washington Hoover decided to clear the camps out using the police then the military

  13. Bringing Vigor back to the Presidency As Roosevelt began to rise a s a popular presidential candidate his personal qualities began to show through. Specifically his strong ability to persuade and convince people. Originally thought as too vain his bout with polio brought more aware of human suffering. He would use this charisma by keeping confidence with the people through fireside chats.

  14. First Hundred Days As Roosevelt took office the country was on the verge of collapse. Banks were closing in 38 states and unemployment was nearly ¼ of the labor force. Roosevelt took action right away. He declares a bank holiday to get banks back on their feet. He sent fifteen major ideas and received 15 major acts The organization and changes that FDR tried to make would be branded as his new deal

  15. Alphabet soup As Roosevelt begins to change the political landscape he puts in place a number of different organizations to try and stimulate the economy.

  16. Tennessee Valley Authority The TVA was an attempt at regional planning. The result was that the organization built a series of dams in Seven states that controlled flooding and produced electricity. It took some of the most underdeveloped areas and brought them into the modern era.

  17. National Recovery Administration This organization was FDR’s attempt to achieve economic advance through planning and cooperation among government, business, and labor. Business were looking to stabilize production and raise prices. Labor leaders were looking to spread work. The NRA attempted to meet the needs of both. The organization had business put in place fair competition codes and realistic limits on production. As well as respecting the rights of workers This would eventually collapse as both sides were looking for their best interest.

  18. Agricultural Adjustment Administration The AAA existed to allocate land form farmers in an attempt to take land out of production. This was an attempt to lower crop prices. Farmers were paid subsidies to get by. This organization had mixed success 1934 farmers income rose for the first time since WWI. The Dust Bowl also limited production at this time

  19. Civilian Conservation Corps This organization was Roosevelt's own idea
