  1. February 22, 2012 Mrs. Ward’s Science Class James Martin MS

  2. DO NOW!!! • Sketch the following diagram of DNA in your science notebook…

  3. Agenda for 02/22/2012 • Welcome Back! I hope you had a wonderful & restful weekend! • I need: • Science Fair Projects & Parent Letters • Return ASAP—Raise your hand if you need another copy • Today: • Return Papers • Retests on Friday • Open Notebook Microbiology Tests…due FRIDAY • Counts as a TEST grade • Pre-Assessment for Probability of Inheritance • Welcome to DNA! • Demonstration • What is DNA? Why do we have DNA? Where is it located? What does it look like? How does it work? Why do we need to know this?

  4. Probability of InheritancePre-Assessment This is a formative assessment. There will be no grades. Just do your best. Raise you hand if you have a question or concern.

  5. What is DNA??? • DNA is the common name for DEOXYRIBONUCLEIC ACID • Learn this for some bonus points on a test!  • DNA is the hereditary material for almost all organisms. • The majority of DNA is located within the cell’s nucleus. • Of EACH cell…each has a copy of the organism’s DNA. • Let’s Check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOvMNOMRRm8&feature=player_embedded#!

  6. What is the structure of DNA? • DNA structure was discovered by Watson and Cricks in 1953 • Described as a “DOUBLE HELIX” • Like a twisted ladder.

  7. DNA is: • Made up of: • a sugar-phosphate backbone • (Sides of the DNA) • Four chemical Bases (that match up) • ADENINE, GUANINE, CYTOSINE, and THYMINE • AGCT (RUNGS OF THE LADDER) • A always pairs with T • G always pairs with C • This is how DNA is able to split and replicate and keep the same genetic material. (The cells match up the pairs like a puzzle!)

  8. Another video…about base pairs! • http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&feature=endscreen&v=5raJePXu0OQ

  9. If we have time… DNA Demonstration

  10. EXIT TICKET • Write down a memory code for ATGC • (REMEMBER Please Make A Taco [with] Cheese?) • Where is DNA located? • What is the name of the structure? • APPLY YOUR KNOWLEDGE: • Why might DNA be important in paternity testing?
