  1. Key Point 1: What is a titration? • A titration is a way of calculating the concentrationof a substance

  2. KP2: How do titrations work? • We measure the volumeof the substance with unknown concentration • We also measure the volumeand molarityof the known substance • We add the known substance until the unknown substance is completelyneutralized

  3. What does this look like?

  4. KP3: How does this help us calculate the concentration of the unknown substance? • First, we figure out how many moles of base we have (this is the number of moles of OH) • To neutralize, the # moles of OH = # moles of H • Once we know the # moles of H, we can figure out the # moles of acid

  5. Example: 4 L of 0.5 M NaOH is added to 2L of an unknown concentration of HCl, until it totally neutralizes the acid. What is the concentration of the HCl?

  6. KP4: Is there a formula for this? • If we know how much of the known substance it took to neutralize the unknown substance, we can calculate its concentration: MacidVacid= MbaseVbase

  7. 4 L of 0.5 M NaOH is added to 2L of an unknown concentration of HCl, until it totally neutralizes the acid. What is the concentration of the HCl?

  8. KP5: What if the base has more than one OH? • MV = MV works if the ratio of H to OH is 1:1 • If the ratio si 1:2 or 2:1, we have to take that into consideration in our formula. Example: It takes 2 L of 4M Ca(OH)2to just barely neutralize 1 L of an unknown concentration of HCl. What is the concentration of the HCl solution? MacidVacid= 2 MbaseVbase

  9. Guided Practice It takes 0.5 L of LiOHto just barely neutralize 1 L of an unknown concentration of HF. What is the concentration of the HF solution?

  10. 0.1 L of 0.01 M Ba(OH)2 is added to 0.4L of an unknown concentration of HCl, until it totally neutralizes the acid. What is the concentration of the HCl?
