  1. Pulau Ubin Beachfront Resort Dexter Kuah (2o106) Samuel Yu (2o124) Tan Ming Shi (2o127) Darren Wong (2o131)

  2. Resort Location • Maman Beach • There is plenty of space for the coastline to be extended by land reclamation • Already altered by people to make it more convenient to unload cargo • Minimal additional damage to the ecosystem

  3. Resort Location • We will also be clearing the trees in the surrounding areas but trees and various sorts of plants will be planted all around the resort to replace these felled trees • Timber will be used for flooring to make sure the trees are not felled for nothing

  4. Land reclamation • Land reclamation is the process where useless land is reclaimed and turned into land that can be used • Land reclamation will allow the resort to be built with minimal damage to the island itself as we will be using a fairly unproductive patch of the seabed instead

  5. Importance of coastal management • Waves can erode the coastline and can destabilise any structures built on it • Proper management of the coast is essential for any beachfront resort

  6. Coastal management • To protect the coast, we will be using wooden groynes as a temporary measure • An artificial coral reef will be grown to replace the wooden groynes • Groynes are inexpensive and coral reefs are “green” as they are natural, renewable • They also require zero maintanence as the coral will replace itself

  7. Steps that need to be taken • Perform more detailed surveys of area to ensure minimal environmantal impact • Clean up the beaches • Clean up the water around the beach • Use beach nourishment to extend the coastline

  8. Resort features • Concrete to build the structure as concrete is sturdy and strong • Plant greenery all around to go with “green theme” • Use bamboo to build the furniture as it is fast growing

  9. Resort features • Solar panels on roofs to minimize space used and to go along with “green theme” • Solar panels is renewable and abundant • Energy produced by solar panels can be stored for a rainy day

  10. Energy-saving practices • Appliances can only be used, switched on when card key is inserted into slot at the door • This will ensure that energy will not be wasted if the appliances are accidentally not switched off and the user is not around

  11. Green practices • Energy-saving light bulbs will be used instead of the conventional ones • These light bulbs are as efficient as conventional ones and save much more energy

  12. Green practices • Water from showers and taps will be used to flush toilets • Minimize water usage, which goes along with “green” theme

  13. Green practices • Recycling bins will be placed all over the resort • Posters will be put up all over to encourage the customers to minimize waste • Rooms that uses the least water, throws away wins prizes such as free lunch or dinner

  14. Attractive features • The main attraction will be the beach sports • Banana boat rides • Coral reef exploration when the artificially planted reef has grown

  15. Attractive features • Nearby Chek Jawa allows tourists to get up close to wildlife when low tide • Jejawa tower in Chek Jawa is a good spot for bird watchers and provides a good view of the island

  16. Attractive features • We will be negotiating with Outward Bound Singapore to organize some activities for the people at the resort • Outward Bound is internationally recognized and hence can attract people • Free rides to Outward Bound daily on solar-powered vehicles

  17. THANK YOU!
