ObjectivesSOL 2.16: The student will tell and write time to the quarter hour, using analog and digital clocks. • Review the first grade SOL of telling time to the hour and half hour using analog and digital clocks. • Review hour and minute hands. • Discuss time related vocabulary and concepts. • Review how many minutes are in an hour. • Discuss that there are 30 minutes in a half hour. • Discuss that each quarter of an hour has 15 minutes. • Practice counting by fives.

  4. Prior knowledge will be assessed through the use of Judy clocks, background knowledge discussion, and guided practice. Pre-assessment

  5. Students will match analog time to digital time using flashcards, Judy clocks, and wipe off boards. Instruction will begin with hour and half-hour, progressing to quarter hour. Teaching Strategies

  6. Teaching Strategies • Students will play games to reinforce their skills. Examples include Bingo, Quizmo, Memory Match, and relay races. • Re-teaching strategies include small group and one-on-one instruction.

  7. Teaching Strategies • Students will practice writing time using clock stamps. • Re-teaching strategies include small group instruction with Judy clocks and wipe off boards.

  8. Teaching Strategies • Students will use time flashcards to practice identifying time. • Re-teaching quarter hour can be done by dividing the clock into ¼ fractions.

  9. Assessment Practices • Students will play board games to practice telling time.

  10. Writing to Learn Strategies • Students will use writing to learn and practice telling time. Examples include writing to sequence their day and creating personal timelines.

  12. Final Assessment • Students will take a paper and pencil test to demonstrate their knowledge of telling time to the hour, half-hour, and quarter hour. • Re-teaching will be done with small group and one-on-one instruction as needed.
