  2. METABOLISM • Definition: The total of all chemical activities of an organism that enables it to stay alive, grow and reproduce • Living things are divided into two groups based on how they obtain food energy. • Producers make their own food. • Consumers can’t make their own food.

  4. RespirationC6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy (ATP) • Both producers and consumers break down sugar (glucose) in their cells. • CO2 is given off as “waste”. • This process is called Cellular Respiration. • This takes place in the mitochondria with the help of oxygen (O2).

  6. Fermentation • Sometimes, when oxygen levels are low, glucose can be broken down to produce small amounts of energy. • An organic compound called lactic acid is formed. Alcohol may also be a byproduct. • This process takes place in the cytoplasm.
