Warm Up January 19, 2011 A country in West Africa is upset because the U.S. is suddenly imposing a tax on goods it exports to the U.S. Such a trade barrier is known as Exchange rate Natural trade barrier Embargo Tariff 2. Which compares an autocratic to a democratic government? A Citizens can participate more in democratic governments. B The government has less power in autocratic governments. C Citizens can participate more in autocratic governments. D Autocratic and democratic governments are the same.

  2. Standards SS7CG1 The student will compare and contrast various forms of government. a. Describe the ways government systems distribute power: unitary, confederation, and federal. Explain how governments determine citizen participation: autocratic, oligarchic, and democratic. b. Explain how governments determine citizen participation: autocratic, oligarchic, and democratic. c. Describe the two predominant forms of democratic governments: parliamentary and presidential.

  3. Today I will learn how various forms of government operate because, as a society increases in complexity and interacts with other societies, the complexity of the government also increases.

  4. Essential Question • Explain how governments determine citizen participation: autocratic, oligarchic, and democratic. • How do the unitary, confederation, and federal government systems distribute power?

  5. Activator Kagan Walk- The teacher will pose a question and play some music. You will walk around the room and reflect on the answer. When the music stops you will high five the student closest to you and then share your answer. If both students agree, you will stand face to face. If you disagree you will stand back to back.

  6. Closing-In the Hot Seat Several of you are sitting in the “HOT SEAT”. Look underneath your desk or chair to see if you have a sticky not placed there. Students who have questions on sticky notes will then take turns reading the question and attempting to provide an answer. You may call on a classmate to help you if you are stuck.
