  2. Social Realism in Film Social Realism as a genre is dominant in film production in Britain. Social Realism films are fairly representative of real life. Stories, characters and settings are based loosely on an everyday character from the generation. A typical social realism film will feature characters from a working class background who through social or racial injustice or economic hardship have difficulty surviving the daily grind. Conventions of Social Realism are evident in films such as Trainspotting directed by Danny Boyle, This is England directed by Shane Meadows and Billy Elliot directed by Stephen Daldry

  3. British New Wave Films 1950s British New Wave films finally gave the working-class a voice and celebrated their common identity. Previously the lower classes had been depicted on film as comic characters or as a nondescript and ancillary group. Now their daily lives were considered relevant enough to be the very premise of a story and they were portrayed as individuals with personalities, opinions and emotions. The nature of these films, which concerned the everyday events of ordinary people, earned them the tag of kitchen sink dramas. www.moviemail-online.co.uk

  4. This is England This is England is a social realism film by Shane Meadows, it is a story about a troubled boy growing up in England, set in 1983. He comes across a few skinheads on his way home from school, after a fight. They become his new best friends even like family. It is based loosely around the experiences of the director Shane Meadows.

  5. Fish Tank Fish Tank is an independent film written and directed by Andrea Arnold, the film was paid for by BBC Film productions and the UK film council. The film is about a 15 year old teenager who lives on a rundown estate in Essex with her tarty mother and foul mouthed younger sister. The conventions seen in the original British New Wave films can also be seen in this film including the fact that she is from a working class background.

  6. Made in Britain Made in Britain is a social realism film which was made on a budget of £1000, The main character Trevor is a 16 year old, sometimes-violent skinhead with no regard for authority, and would rather spend his time stealing cars than sitting in the detention centre to which he is sent.
