Interagency Priorities for Tropical Cyclone Research Workshop

This workshop focuses on the priorities for tropical cyclone research, involving all relevant agencies. The planning and research cover a broad front, with a need to work on various aspects. The workshop aims to establish win-win partnerships and address concerns related to control and funding. The focus areas include satellites, field experiments, research-to-operations, and interdepartmental collaboration. Potential gaps in planning and immediate needs will also be discussed. The workshop aims to track progress, assess contributions, and emphasize impact evaluation for transition candidates and applied research projects.

  1. Workshop: Interagency Priorities for Tropical Cyclone Research All agencies doing relevant work and relates well to the Tropical Cyclone Research Plan -- Planning and research reflects needs -- Planning and research covers a broad front -- Work is needed on a very broad front Partnership Philosophy Well Accepted, Many Proposed, and Several Specific Projects -- Desired Win-Win Partnerships -- Normal agency concerns/reservations remain – control/funding (separate agency funding support & reliability, as well as credit for results)

  2. NASA Focus Areas Satellites Field exs. Priority research Interdepartmental Hurricane Conference, Charleston, SC

  3. NOAA Focus Areas:OFCM TC Research Plan Table 5-1. Research Priorities in Atmospheric and Ocean Science • HFIP HFS B, B, R2O B, OSE B, B, 62nd IHC

  4. Workshop: Interagency Priorities for Tropical Cyclone Research Agency Focus Areas Follow (Restricted to) Broader Mission Areas -- NOAA: R2O (Research to Operations); Obs/Modeling -- NASA: Satellite/Remote Sensing; Evaluation Field Campaigns -- USN/ONR: Communicating Risk; R2O (OSSEs/TestBed/Impacts); Field Campaigns -- NSF: Field Campaigns/Physics Evaluation; Model Improvement; COSMIC benefits; Social Impacts (Message Needs) Potential Gaps in Current Planning (greatest immediate needs?) -- Lack of educated people to support advanced research -- Slow progress on wind lidar (global 3D wind solution) -- Operationalizing Data (cal/val/QC); >OSSEs for Impact definition -- Broaden Research Activities on Intensity -- Civil Agency Lack of Targeted Transition (R2O) Funding (e.g., DoD 6.4)

  5. Workshop: Interagency Priorities for Tropical Cyclone Research The Way Ahead (TC R&D Plan) – Progress Tracking & Continued Supporting Activities -- Annual Progress & Assessment Report of Agency Contributing/Responsibility Areas (@IHC) --- Research Underway --- Research Planned --- Transition Candidates --- Completed/Underway/Planned -- Key Emphasis Area for All Transition Candidates and Applied Research Projects: Impact Evaluation (needed for funding support) (including communication of risk elements)
