  1. Equal But Not Identical: Biblical Role of Men and Women in the Local Church I Timothy 3; Titus 1; I Peter 5 by: Jay Brennan

  2. What does Godly Leadership Look Like? • "There is no substitute for character. You can buy brains, but you can't buy character."Robert Cook • “…It is not in the still calm of life, or the repose of a pacific station, that great characters are formed. …”Abigail Adams • A note on the character qualities: • Applies specifically to the elders of a local church • Fits in general to all who are called in Christian leadership positions. • Ultimately describes what all godly and mature Christians should look like.

  3. Secularization and Church Leadership • Everywhere within the evangelical church long held views - views held since the 1st century church, are being challenged. • Secularization of our culture, away from biblical norms, has spilled over into the church. • Our question this morning: Does the scripture teach that women can serve as elders and pastors?

  4. A General Statement • I believe that God has laid the burden of leading his people upon men. • The same principles that called forth godly men to lead the nation of Israel are the same principles that call forth godly men to lead the Christian church. • I believe the same principle is a work in marriage, which is why God calls husbands to lead their families and serve as its head.

  5. Women carry out significant roles in ministry • Miriam the prophetess (Exodus 15:20-21), • Deborah the judge (Judges 4-5), • Huldah the prophetess (II Kings 22:8-20), • Esther who served as queen in Babylon, • Anna the prophetess (Luke 2:36-38), • the loyal group of women who accompanied Jesus on his journeys (Luke 8:1-3), • Mary Magdalene who was one of the first to see the risen Lord (John 20:11-18), • Priscilla who with her husband Aquilla took Apollos aside and taught him the way of God more accurately (Acts 18:26-28), • The four daughters of Philip who were prophetesses (Acts 21:8-9), Euodia and Syntyche who were Paul's co-workers (Philippians 4:2-3) and • Phoebe who was a "servant" (or "deacon") of the church (Romans 16:1).

  6. Another Look at Genesis 1-3 • Men and women share equally in bearing the image of God. Genesis 1:26-27 • Men and women are both given the command to subdue the earth. 1:28 • As the "king of creation," man is created first. 2:15 • The command to rule the earth was first given to man. 2:15 • Woman is created later to meet the need of man’s loneliness. 2:18 • The woman is created as a "Helper," one who completes what is lacking. 2:18 • To signify the close relationship, the woman is created from the man's body. 2:22 • To signify his leadership position, the man names the woman. 2:23 • The woman sins first, being deceived by the Serpent. 3:6 • The man sins deliberately. He bears the ultimate responsibility for the Fall. 3:9; Romans 5:12-19 • As a result of the Fall, the relationship between man and woman is now changed.

  7. Danvers Affirmations on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood -1987 • Both Adam and Eve were created in God’s image, equal before God as persons and distinct in their manhood and womanhood. • Distinctions in masculine and feminine roles are ordained by God as part of the created order, and should find an echo in every human heart. • Adam’s headship in marriage was established by God before the Fall, and was not the result of sin. • The Fall introduced distortions into the relationships between men and women:

  8. Summary from Genesis: • Bible does not teach male superiority or any supposed female inferiority • Both made in the image of God • Equal in worth and dignity • Equal does not mean identical • Equal does not mean interchangeable • Adam is called to be a man and Eve is called to be a women - equal but different • Divine pattern of leadership estabished by God in creation.

  9. I Tim. 2 and Titus in light of Genesis • Women are not to teach men or exercise authority over them. I Timothy 2:12 • Women can teach in the church, but not in a “office” (elder, pastor) that places them in authority over men. • Two Reasons: I Timothy 2 • The order of creation v.13 • The order of the Fall v.14

  10. Summary • One of the biblical qualifications for elder is that it be a man • Should there be women in ministry in the local church - YES!!! an Emphatic, YES!!! • We are people of God’s Word…we believe it, we obey it…even on issues which are difficult…and this one is difficult. • Next week: “Not Made of Sugar Candy”- Qualities and Character of Elders and all those who name the name of Jesus.
