Physical Education Master Plan Goals • To provide quality physical education for each child • To develop a well planned physical education program that is sequential, developmental, and age appropriate for every child • To provide physical education programs that help children and youths develop active lifestyle fitness commitments to their own physical well-being, health, fitness, and active lifestyle • To develop effective physical education programs that balance and contribute to a child’s academic learning • To develop existing physical education resources throughout the Bay Area Physical Education Learning Support and Equity Academics & Professional Development August 2008

  3. Our Mission Our mission is to ensure that every elementary student in SFUSD receives 200 minutes of physical education every ten instructional days taught by a credentialed teacher. To achieve this mission, Learning Support and Equity is offering Physical Education Program Support for elementary schools Physical Education Learning Support and Equity Academics & Professional Development August 2008

Physical Education Program Support Teaching Support and Equity recruits school sites to apply for Physical Education Program Support Physical Education Program Support includes components integral to implementing quality physical education programs at elementary school sites Year 1 2007-2008: 12 sites and 2.5 EPES Year 2 2008-2009: 19 sites and 11 EPES Physical Education Learning Support and Equity Academics & Professional Development August 2008

Components of Program Support • Professional Development for administrators, classroom teachers, and Elementary School PE Site Coordinators • District adopted curriculum for every teacher • Funding for Elementary School PE Site Coordinators • Physical education equipment • Training and materials for state mandated • FitnessGram test administration • Year round support from Learning Support and Equity Content/Implementation Specialists • Placement of Elementary Physical Education Specialists to provide direct instruction and collaborate with classroom teachers in providing instruction Physical Education Learning Support and Equity Academics & Professional Development August 2008

Professional DevelopmentClassroom Teachers Teachers will receive professional development in the following areas: • Physical Education instruction using effective methodology and district adopted curriculum • Management of equipment and instructional time • Establishment and maintenance of a positive classroom environment • Instruction and assessment of students using the California Content Standards • Appropriate and inappropriate PE practices Professional development will be offered throughout the school year. Teachers attending will receive extended hours pay for professional development.   7. Elementary School Physical Education Site Coordinator Each Program Support site will have an Elementary Physical Education Site Coordinator. Responsibilities include: • Assemble and maintain equipment storage area • Receive all physical education equipment orders • Check all equipment on a regular basis to ensure its safety for use • Work closely with the Elementary Physical Education Specialist and school site staff to ensure equipment maintained, returned, and stored correctly • Work closely with the Elementary Physical Education Specialist and school site staff to devise an effective method for staff access to equipment storage area • Inventory all equipment Physical Education Learning Support and Equity Academics & Professional Development August 2008

Elementary Physical Education Specialist Responsibilities 2008-2009 • Provide direct instruction to elementary school students at various school sites • Collaborate with the Physical Education Content Specialist, Implementation Specialists, site teachers and administrators to provide a comprehensive and sequential standards-based Physical Education program to ensure all students have access to the core curriculum • Work closely with the Content Specialist and Implementation Specialists in developing, training, and implementing physical education at elementary school sites • Develop/review new curriculum and training strategies with Elementary Physical Education Specialists, Content Specialists, and Implementation Specialists • Attend professional development for Elementary Physical Education Specialists provided by Learning Support and Equity Physical Education Learning Support and Equity Academics & Professional Development August 2008

Elementary Physical Education Specialist Responsibilities 2008-2009 • Assist with student and program assessment at school sites collaborate with classroom teachers regarding student improvement • Attend school site staff meetings and professional development held during teacher work hours • Attend Quality Daily Physical Education Workshops 1-6 • Be available during common planning time at school site to meet with principals, teachers, and PE Site Coordinator regarding physical education instruction and program implementation • Collaborate with Site PE Coordinator to manage PE equipment access and maintenance • Return all PE equipment after use to PE storage area in proper order • Utilize lesson tracking tools with classroom teachers to communicate lesson progress • Other duties as assigned Physical Education Learning Support and Equity Academics & Professional Development August 2008

  10. Program Assurances School site will agree to the following: • 75% of staff agree to participate in the program • No other consultant or agency can provide physical education during the instructional day • Every teacher will be responsible for providing physical education instruction using district adopted curriculum. • Every teacher will provide 200 minutes of physical education every ten instructional days following a physical education master schedule • Participating teachers agree to attend three professional development workshops each year • Classroom teacher will collaborate with Elementary Physical Education Specialist (EPES) to provide direct instruction. • Site administrators will collaborate with PE Site Coordinator, EPES and staff to devise an effective method for staff access to equipment storage area • Provide workspace for EPES and appropriate and adequate storage space for instructional materials and equipment Physical Education Learning Support and Equity Academics & Professional Development August 2008
