The Fabulous City of Timbuktu • Timbuktu , Mali was the trade center of West Africa. • Salt was so important for preserving food that West Africans gladly traded gold for North African salt. • The west African leader, Mansa Musa, went on a pilgrimage to Mecca. • When he returned, he brought along Arab scholars.
