  1. RSS Feeds and News Aggregates • The Push-Pull world…

  2. Are RSS feeds, Blogs and News Aggregates for you? • With all the information on the net, how do we make sense of it all? • Wouldn’t it be nice to filter out results we don’t want? • Do you revisit sites over and over to see new content? • Would you like to share resources easily? • Would you like to cut down on your search times and be more productive?

  3. Where we were… • In the beginning the Web was a “pull” based technology. Surfers had to search and then click to download or “pull” the information to their computers. • For some it was tricky….

  4. Tug o War… The pull world… • The Pros: • Individual access to a world of information • Quick communication • A wealth of knowledge somewhere out there… • The Cons: • How do you sort and filter a “world of information” • Endless searching for meager or low quality results • Labour intensive… (you mean I have to find it??) • Suitability and Authenticity

  5. RSS and the Push World • With the Advent or RSS (Rich Site Summary) technology, the web became a place where information could be pushed to surfers… • They didn’t have to go to it, it came to them. • And best of all…. We can control what we get!

  6. Aggregates • So what do I do with it? • By utilizing news aggregating software, you can select high quality news sources on any topic imaginable and have it automatically pushed to you each day. • Think of it as an electronic newspaper and YOU are the editor.

  7. Aggregates • Once you set up and select your news sources, the information updates itself. • Results are presented in an easy to skim headline format allowing for quick scanning and selection.

  8. You select your sources, and once they are set up the news aggregate retrieves new information every time that source is updated.

  9. Select your source and the latest posts are displayed as headline links to the article.

  10. Lastly you select the articles you want to add to your blog, right click and post them.

  11. Blogs • The Web Log or “blog” is simply a place to store information you like or want to use and share. • Articles from your news aggregate can be stored here so again… NO SEARCHING for them. • It’s easy to share your blog and have others join who share your interests and can also add their own information.

  12. Once you post the links, the blog updates automatically.

  13. RSS • RSS feeds can tie everything together, and create a powerful tool for sharing information in the classroom. • If you decide to use your blog as a feed, it can give you a flexible, easy way to keep your class, or website up to date, and on the edge of the news in the areas you choose.

You have just made it so that with a little effort your website, course or classroom webpage is easy to keep current, and well-informed!! The nuts and bolts…

  15. Examples • Ways to combine a news aggregate, Blog and RSS feed into a web space… • Current events… • Cutting edge news • Posts for discussion

  16. Students can click the links, read the articles, and you have no more worries about random surfing, unsuitable resources, or getting bogged down with fruitless searching!!
