  2. The POWER of Words Written or spoken, words are continuously propelling us through life. They lift us up, drag us down, wound us deeply or heal our hearts. Words have the power to build our confidence. Watch The Power of Words and think about how the quote above connects to the video. As you begin reading Locomotion, notice how the power of words helps the main character, Lonnie, convey different character traits throughout the novel.

  3. Materials • Locomotion, by Jacqueline Woodson • Thesaurus • Computer with Internet Access • Pencil/Paper • Post-Its • Print the following Materials: Character Trait Connections Organizer

  4. Before Reading In your journal, create two-column notes as shown above. Using a thesaurus, list ten strong adjectives that describe you. Give examples as evidence to support these adjectives.

  5. During Reading While reading, use Post Its to mark character traits and evidence of these traits for your assigned characters. Be prepared to share the character traits/evidence with your group members after completing the book. Group A Characters: Lonnie and Lily Group B Characters: Ms. Marcus and Miss Edna

  6. During Reading As a group, post your findings at Locomotion Character Traits Blog Make sure to include the character, the character trait, the evidence and the page number. The purpose of this is to share your findings so you can build personal connections to characters that you didn’t study.

  7. After Reading On your own, go back and re-read the class blog. If any of these character traits describe you, go back and add them to your two column notes. Using your two column notes, match two character traits from Locomotion to two personal character traits, making a text-to-self connection. Record your information on the Character Trait Connections Organizer

Imitate Lonnie’s poetic style. • Choose one of the character traits from your Character Trait Organizer. • Incorporate the evidence from Locomotion and your own life to create a • poem showing the connection. • Pay attention to spacing and line breaks. • Give your poem a title. • Illustrate your poem, using colors to show the mood your poem portrays. • Go to the Poetry Website to learn more about different kinds of poetry and see examples. Teacher’s Page • Complete the Power of Words and the Before Reading activities prior to having the students read the book. • For the Before Reading activity, provide a hand-out of the two column chart to differentiate for students who might struggle with creating their own. Modify the number of character traits as needed. • For the During Reading activity, divide the class into two groups at your own discretion. • You will need to set up a Blog Website for students to post about their characters. You can use Blogger.com or Wordpress.com. • Before students complete the Beyond Reading activity, you may want to share some examples of Free Verse Poetry. This would be a good time to do any additional lessons on poetry. We suggest Poetry Matters by Ralph Fletcher as a guide. • Peace, Locomotion is the sequel to Locomotion. This book can be used to extend the activities and discussions from this Cyberlesson.
