  2. radiation • Latin, radiationem – “act or process of radiating” • Radiating – “spreading out in all directions” • Definition: energy that moves in the form of EM waves.

  3. luminescence • Suffix – escence which means process or state of being • Root word – lumin, Latin lumen which means light • Definition: production of light without high temperatures

  4. incandescence • Latin candescere – begin to glow, become white • - escence – process or state of being • Definition: production of light by materials with high temperatures

  5. bioluminescence • Prefix bio – “living” • Root lumen – “light • Suffix escence – process or state of being • Definition: production of light by living organisms

  6. fluorescence • Latin fluor- “a flowing” • -escence – process or state of being • Definition: Phenomenon in which a material absorbs EM radiation of one wavelength and gives off EM radiation of a different wavelength

  7. transmission • -trans – “across, beyond, through” • Mission – “act of sending” • Definition: Passage of an EM wave through a medium.

  8. absorption • Latin absorbere – “to swallow up” • Suffix –ion meaning condition or action • Definition: Disappearance of an EM wave into a medium

  9. scattering • Scatter – “to disperse” • Suffix –ing means action • Definition: Spreading out of light rays in all directions

  10. polarization • Latin polaris – “of or pertaining to the poles” • Suffix –ization meaning action, process, or state • Definition: Quality of light in which all of its waves vibrate in the same direction.
