  2. INTRODUCTION & BACKGROUND • EECG established in 1993 • Specializing mainly in Energy, CLIMATE CHANGE and Environment Projects- • Has vast experience working with development agencies- multilateral banks, UN Agencies, regional blocks, African host governments, Utilities, NGOs and private sector entities. • Have worked literally in all SADC countries • Was actively involved in the last important recent CCS initiatives in Southern Africa

  3. INTRODUCTION & BACKGROUND • First Major CCS workshop in 2007-organized EAST/Southern Africa CCS/CDM workshop • Low level of awareness on CCS amongst Stakeholders • Lack of capacity on CCS • Information Gap on Storage Potential • Coordinated Regional project on follow-up CCS initiative 2010 involving Botswana, Namibia and Mozambique -ADDRESSING • Follow up on storage potential- atlas as SA • Follow-up on a regulatory framework CCS • Follow-up on Capture sites and technology • Need for a Regional Forum in form of CCS-Network- keep interest on CCS going and updating on developments-targeting practitioners and also policy makers.

  4. PROPOSAL ON REGIONAL FORUM- CCS NETWORK • Initial Brainstorming by Dr Peter Zhou (EECG), Tony Surridge (SACCCS), Dr Heleen de Connick (ECN) • Draft Outline of the Proposed Regional CCS Forum

  5. WHO IS TARGETED

  6. ACTIVITIES

  7. GOVERNANCE - lessons on • Considered other Regional Networks and Associations that have been successful e.g. • SADC Organisations-politically supported agencies • SAPP • RERA • FANRPAN- well resourced agents • SAPIA –private sector oil • SACTEN etc- centre of excellence initiatives • BONWEC-high level support but ad hoc • CCS Forum would be Registered as Pty Ltd, Foundation, Association or Network etc • Managed by an Organizing/Management Committee through a Secretariat

  8. POSSIBLE STRUCTURE Country relevant ministries agree on an MOU. When Members meet once a year for Annual general meeting Provides and sets the TORs, Objective and strategic direction of the network

  9. POSSIBLE STRUCTURE • Solicit membership and keep records • Act as cost centre for grants provided and produce and manage accounts • Work with advisory committee to facilitate production of Business Plan on what to do (say ) each 3 year period (e.g. what workshops will be done, what courses to be provided, potential studies, production of geological atlases etc)

  10. POSSIBLE STRUCTURE Country technical teams are important for tackling technical issues (e.g. Geological storage potential atlas, harmonisation of the regulatory framework, cross boarder transportation and storage, long term liability) Working groups at regional level can be formed as necessary to tackle specific issues being tackled by the specific technical teams.

  11. Where we are • Botswana Innovation Hub had agreed at workshop to host CCS-Network Secretariat. • Notes of brainstorming presented to BIH • Constraints of resources- financing and staffing • BIH preferred web based tech (information sharing) managed CCS-Network because of low staffing • Not much progress to date

  12. WHAT IS NEEDED • Revive interest in stakeholders and establish secretariat • Provide resources to Secretariat • Leadership to be clear in terms of defining agenda • Audience/impact for CCS-NETWORK products defined-regionally and nationally • Who can support!
