  2. Intro Jesus once asked the Pharisees, “What do you think about the Christ?” (Mt. 22:42) • Mt. 22:41-42: They answered, “The son of David.” • Mt. 22:43-45: Jesus asked them how that could be when David called him “Lord?” • Mt. 22:46: They refused to answer or to ask any more questions. • Jesus pointed out He was greater than David, and David foresaw His day and authority • The reaction to this question varies: • Indifference • Deep faith • Denial "Denying The Master Who Bought Them"

  3. Intro To deny Christ is to risk the terrible consequences of being denied by Christ! Mt. 10:32-33 32. "Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. 33. "But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven. II Pet. 2:1-2 1. But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. 2. Many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned; We are to deny many things in this life (Titus 2:12), especially in order to live godly, but the costly denial is to deny Christ, which will cost us our soul! "Denying The Master Who Bought Them"

  4. Men Deny Christ by Denying His Authority II Pet. 2:1: “Even denying the Master (Lord).” • “Master”: • Despotes[des-pot'-ace ] (G1203): “Husband; an absolute ruler (despot), with unlimited authority or power; Lord, Master.” • God declared the authority of Christ • II Pet. 1:16-18; Mt. 17:5 • Jesus affirmed His authority • Mt. 28:18-20; Lk. 24:46-47 • The apostles repeatedly affirmed the authority of Christ • Acts 2:38; Acts 4:10, 12; Col. 3:17 Col. 3:17 17. Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father. "Denying The Master Who Bought Them"

  5. Men Deny Christ by Denying His Authority II Pet. 2:1: “Even denying the Master (Lord).” • Men deny Christ’s authority today by: • An appeal to worldly wisdom – Prov. 14:12; I Cor. 1:20-21 • Concluding the majority determines right and wrong – Mt. 7:13-14 • Believing church councils, creeds, preachers, popes, etc. are authoritative – I Cor. 4:6: “Not to exceed what is written.” • Loving family more – Mt. 10:37-38: “Hate” (Lk. 14:26) means “love less.” Paul had to give up the religion of his parents (Gal. 1:14). • Binding Law of Moses today – II Cor. 3:12-16; Gal. 2:21; 3:23-25; Col. 2:14 • Believing one’s emotions or feelings are an accurate guide in serving God – Jn. 8:32; I Tim. 2:4: The truth sets one free; God wants all to know the truth! Denying Christ’s authority is to deny Him! "Denying The Master Who Bought Them"

  6. Men Deny Christ by Denying His Vicarious Death II Pet. 2:1: “Denying the Master who bought them” • “Denying the Master who bought them” shows the • seriousness of the charge: they denied the Lord whom • they belong to! • Christ’s blood bought us from sin (Acts 20:28; I Cor. 6:20; I Pet. 1:18-19) • Redemption: Forgiveness of sins is in the blood of Christ – Eph. 1:7; Col. 1:14 • Christ died for us (in our stead) • Vicarious: endured for somebody else (vicarious suffering); delegated (vicarious authority). (Webster’s College Dictionary) • Rom. 5:6-10: While we were still enemies of God in our sins, Christ died for us! • II Cor. 5:21: He was innocent of sin but took our sins upon Himself. II Cor. 5:21 21. He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. "Denying The Master Who Bought Them"

  7. Men Deny Christ by Denying His Vicarious Death II Pet. 2:1: “Denying the Master who bought them” • Men deny His death for their sins today by believing they • can be saved by: • Their own schemes, plans, and programs – Titus. 3:5 • Being good citizens, benevolent, loving, etc. – Eph. 2:8-9 (Acts 10) • Obtaining some strange emotional feeling/experience – Titus. 2:12-14 Denying Christ’s death for our sins is to deny Him! "Denying The Master Who Bought Them"

  8. Men Deny Christ by Denying His Deity II Pet. 2:1: “Master (Lord).” • “Master” (“Lord”): • He was the subject of O.T. prophecy (Is. 53) • God declared from Heaven that He was His Son (Mt. 17:5; II Pet. 1:17-18) • His resurrection from the dead is proof of His deity (Acts 17:30-31; Rom. 1:4) • Men deny His deity today when they: • Teach He was nothing more than a great prophet or religious leader! • Jn. 20:30-31; I Jn. 2:22-23 Jn. 20:30-31 30. Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31. but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name. Denying Christ as the Son of God (I Jn. 4:2-3) is to deny Him! "Denying The Master Who Bought Them"

  9. Men Deny Christ by Denying His Word II Pet. 2:2: “The way of the truth.” • “Way of the Truth” • One’s reaction to the Lord’s word is his reaction to the Lord – Jn. 12:48 • Christ said He is “the way, the truth, and the life.” (Jn. 14:6) • To be ashamed of the Lord’s words means to be ashamed of the One who spoke them! (Mk. 8:38; II Thess. 1:7-9) Jn. 12:48 48. "He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day. "Denying The Master Who Bought Them"

  10. Men Deny Christ by Denying His Word II Pet. 2:2: “The way of the truth.” • Men deny the truth of Christ’s word today when they: • Change or ashamed of the Lord’s words about baptism – Mk. 16:16 • Change or ashamed of the Lord’s words about the church – Mt. 16:18: “church” not “churches.” • Change or ashamed of the Lord’s words on marriage and divorce – Mt. 19:9 • Change or ashamed of the Lord’s words through the apostles on living a holy life – Gal. 5:19-22; Tit. 2:12 Denying Christ’s words as truth is to deny Him! "Denying The Master Who Bought Them"

  11. Conclusion “What do you think about the Christ?” (Mt. 22:42) Since He is the Son of God, He is man’s Savior – Mt. 11:28-30 Men who deny the Lord can expect to be denied by Christ in the Judgment (Mt. 10:33) Those who confess Him by acknowledging His authority, Hiss death, His deity, and His word of truth in their lives will be confessed by Christ on the day of Judgment! (Mt. 10:32) Will you risk the cost of your soul and deny your Lord, or obey His word and be saved?! "Denying The Master Who Bought Them"

  12. “What Must I Do To Be Saved?” Hear The Gospel (Jn. 5:24; Rom. 10:17) Believe In Christ (Jn. 3:16-18; Jn. 8:24) Repent Of Sins (Lk. 13:35; Acts 2:38) Confess Christ (Mt. 10:32; Rom. 10:10) Be Baptized (Mk. 16:16; Acts 22:16) Remain Faithful (Jn. 8:31; Rev. 2:10) For The Erring Saint: Repent (Acts 8:22), Confess (I Jn. 1:9), Pray (Acts 8:22)
