  2. Planning Ahead So you’ve just completed Health Science Education but you’re not sure what to take next. In this presentation we’ll explore course options and pathways within the Health Science Department!!

  3. Career Paths There are several career paths leading to different capstone experiences. On the next few slides we’ll discuss your options.

  4. Capstone Courses Capstone courses provide either an internship experience or industry certification. In some cases, maybe, both.

  5. What does a Pharmacy Tech Do? 1)Help prepare and give out prescription medication. 2) They take prescriptions over the phone and in person 3) Work with health professionals and customers 4) Help mix medicines 5) Count pills 6) Measure medication 7) Label and give instructions for medicine 8) Take payments. Average salary $32,170

  6. Pharmacy Tech-Required Courses • Health Science Education • Medical Therapeutics or Anatomy/physiology • Pharmacy Technician- Industry Certification Pharmacy Tech (Must be within 6 mos of graduation to take the exam and 18 to be employed)

What does a Certified Personal Trainer Do? • Individual certified to have a varying degree of knowledge of general fitness involved in exercise prescription and instruction. • They motivate clients by setting goals and providing feedback and accountability to client Average salary wthout college degree $33,000

  10. Certified Medical Assistant Typical duties include: *Obtaining Vital Signs and Anthropometric measurements. *Phlebotomy *Performing EKG’s *Preparing and administering medications as directed by physician. *Assisting the physicians and nurses with a variety of procedures

Certified Medical Assistant-Required Courses • Health Science Ed • Medical Therapeutics • Diagnostic Medicine • Cardiovascular Services- Industry certification- EKG tech(must be within 1 year of graduation to take the exam- your certification will be active when you graduate- must be 18 to be employed)/Clinical Internship/CCMA- (NIC-CCMA)

  12. Emergency Medical Responder *Emergency Medical Responders provide assistance to EMT’s, paramedicals and other higher level personnel at scenes of emergencies and during transport. *This a volunteer position, but offers a valuable experience in emergency care.

  13. Emergency Services-Required Courses • Health Science Education • Medical Therapeutics or Anatomy & Physiology • Emergency Medical Responder- Dual credit course, EMR certification *Must be 17 to take the exam

Clinical Internship-2 Tracks Clinical Internship/General *Semester long observation in a 2-3 areas of interest. *Spring semester, 4th block *Must be 16 and able to drive to clinical sites. *Application only *Limited to 15 students Clinical Internship/EKG/CCMA *2 Blocks *Semester long internship; variety of health care facilities. *Spring semester *Focus will be preparation for the EKG Tech and Certified Medical Assistant Exams. *Application only; seniors have first priority *Must be able to drive to clinical sites. *Limited to 15 students.

  15. Nutrition and Diet Therapy The Health Science Department firmly believes that nutrition is a key component of wellness. Nutrition and Diet Therapy fulfills a laboratory science credit. The class also incorporates principles of sustainable gardening with our community garden.

  17. Yoga Yoga is part of the Health Science Department’s commitment to promoting wellness in our student community. Yoga can be taken for 1 PE credit.
