  4. Began at City College of San Francisco in 2004 To support AAPI students with high needs • Created at College of Alameda in 2009 with two other learning communities • Initiated here at Laney College in Spring 2010 using special funding under the AANAPISI Grant ABOUTAPASS

  5. Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution • 5-Year Federal Grant to develop best practices to support AAPI students at 2- and 4-year institutions ABOUTAANAPISI

AAPI student is an invisible crisis. • Focus on model minority “success” resulted in less attention to low achievement among AAPI students, leads to neglect of programs and services for AAPI students. • This myth ignores how AAPI students contend with the same issues that other communities face. • AAPI data masks high levels of poverty and academic barriers. Data on some AAPI groups are nonexistent. The Problem with the “Model Minority”

  7. AAPI College Enrollment are evenly distributed in two-year and four-year institutions, with the majority attending public institutions.

  8. AAPI enrollment in public two-year community colleges is increasing faster than in four-year colleges.

Students enroll in APASS classes together as “cohorts” • APASS Counselors help students with school and other issues • Provides tutoring and assistance during LAB hours and help with personal development in workshops • Encourages transfer opportunities with campus visits APASS: OUR LEARNING COMMUNITY

Support student success with transferring to a 4-year college, completion of an AA degree and certificates: • More AAPI ethnic representation • More campus & industry tours • Skill Development: Leadership, communication, internships • Student government engagement • Community engagement APASS Goals

COUNSELING • Your counselor will play an important role in your educational success by: • Developing an education plan; knowing which classes you need for your major and to transfer, or for an AA degree • Assisting you to resolve problems with a class, or anything affecting your performance in school • Working closely with you to build the right schedule, with appropriate units, course sequence and tracking your progress each semester • Your counselor will be your coach, guide and cheerleader
